Banking and finance sector will grow at a good pace in the coming quarters...a glimpse at the results released tell us a story. Actually a run on this sector is to be expected soon. My Banking picks are SAMP/COMB and NTB

Banking sector is a proxy to an economy of any country. Growth of the banking sector is also a key indicator of economic development of a country.

Most banks usually carries a portfolio of investments and different classes of assets to match their deposit and borrowing portfolios. This is in order to maintain risk return ratios of a bank at a comfortable and optimum level. Conservative banks are not necessarily be the best banks in terms of the future growth prospects.

My personal belief is that banks should move away from the conventional banking activities towards more customer orient relationship banking which caters to both individual and corporates. Investment banking and wealth management are two of the most important areas of diversification.

Future growth of Sri Lankan large banks are most likely to be derived through potential takeover and mergers instead of internal credit/profit growth whilst the small banks survival would depends on their ability to reach the grass root levels.

So in my choice for a best bank, I would look at the banks that has the financial strength and diverse customer base that include big corporates to rural farming community spreading across the country.

With careful consideration of many factors I come to the conclusion that only Sampath Bank and Seylan Bank falls within my choice as the best investment opportunity that is available in the banking for the stock market investors. This is my personal opinion.

quibit, investments banks & commercial banks should be strictly separated. We certainly don't want what happened to the US happening here

Forgive me for always playing the role of the contrarian, but I think the banking sector rally was still born. Why? only retailers are buying in the market right now and they simply don't have enough buying power to make shares like HNB, or COMB budge. Smaller banking or finance shares might move and some of them have already. The ones that moved are probably at their right price.

But do collect them for the long term, when the funds return, these will be the first to move and you will get a big return, but don't expect short term gains.

You guys are all wrong.

The banks will run soon. I don't know about HNB or COMB. But banks like NTB, SEYB & LOLC will move. SAMP is also a damn good candidate. We even got a whiff of a run earlier.

Yes the banking sector is the engine of the economy and is usually the first sector to rally. However I believe that there needs to be some serious (foreign) buying coming in the next few weeks for there to be any kind of run. See what happened to JKH despite great results. Local institutions are not in a buying mood and retailers don't have holding capacity. Some serious big buying needs to trigger a rally.

What i meant was that all these real estate companies that are not going anywhere right now, can appreciate 300, 400 even 500% with all this development projects coming in. But it will take a few years.

Alo of the big corporate money managers are recommending real estate and construction for the big clients
