Free Lanka Capital Holdings, a group that has business interest in plantations, hydro power, leisure and property development sectors has completed a private placement for 700 million rupees, while the firm plans to go public in February 2011, to raise a further 1.5 billion, a senior official said.

"We have already completed the pre-IPO (initial public offering)," Godfrey Aloysius, director at Free Lanka Capital Holdings told LBR.

"We want to complete the IPO by March next year depending on prevailing (stock) market conditions."

The pre-IPO was facilitated by John Keells Stockbrokers, a unit of conglomerate John Keells, the largest conglomerate in the island which has business interest in transport, leisure, financial services, retail and food processing sectors.

Sri Lanka has seen a flood of IPO's since the end of 30 year civil war 19 months ago.

The Colombo Stock Exchange, despite taking a market correction is still one of the best performing indices in the world.

John Keells Stock Brokers and Taprobane Securities, a unit of LOLC and Browns groups would jointly manage the issue.

Malik Carder, director general of market watchdog, Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka told AFP, a foreign news wire services that the Colombo bourse was expected to receive nearly 60 IPO's in 2011.

They are more in to plantation sector. So, they may be listed under plantation sector.

57,000 Acres of land across the country
9,200 Acres of land in the district of Colombo
19,000 Acres of tea
13,000 Acres of rubber
3,500 Acres of commercial timber
12.5 million kg of made tea per annum

if you apply for shares worth 1 million, after a month you will be alotted shares less than 10% of the amount of shares you applied..

90% of your money will be floated for about a month, resulting in opportunity costs..

Depending on the IPO for that 10%, you can get probably 100% profit for that couple of weeks. It is much more safer and surer than putting money into stagnant over-valued market that's not going anywhere. And the great thing is that the rest 90% is safe too.

for 10% investmenet you will gain average - 70,000/=

for one month you will get 7% to 10% profit. which I think very good.

and also I see IPOs as risk free.

Free Lanka at present seems to focus on plantations and hydro power, and it appears that funds are to be raised to invest in tourism (who isn't?) and a commercial property complex in Borella.

Let's see the valuations and prospectus before commenting further, and in particular the price at which the recent private placement was done to selected big players.

Investors should also remember to take note of forthcoming wage hike in plantation sector in analysing company.

The memorundum of understanding MOU is renewed every 2 yrs and next renewal is due in end March 2011.

The MOU is between the Planters association and the trade unions.

We have to apply this ipo on 17th Mar. We would have little information by the time we apply for the ipo.

They Request a daily wage increase from Rs. 285 to 500 and to scrap the current incentive scheme. ( Presently with the incentive a worker earns about Rs 405/= a day )
