As a value investor I am curios to know how much traders really make buying and selling in the short run.

Please be honest - your truthful feedback is welcome

I started at the beginning of last month as a trader and did about 30 transactions. About 20 were profits and others were losses. I made 6% profit in the first week and 5% profit in the second week but then stopped it because it was stressful and I didn't had much time. (You have to sit in front the computer all the time)

But I think the technical skills I gathered are quite useful for mid to long term investing.

I have to say, as long as I did trading, I managed to maintain my original capital, even though the indexes were going down. As soon as I left it, I started loosing capital. Out of Rs.50,000 capital, now I have about 48,800.

Thanks for your feedback - a few observations from me:

1. Traders should factor in real cost of trades - factor in the selling price at the time of purchasing - due to brokerage fee, tax, cess etc
2. Put a value on your time - charge a notional cost to account for the number of hours you spend in front of the computer
3. Bear market trading is more stressful - be prepared
4. Keep a close track of your capital - losses could rise rapidly and wipe out your profit and income
5. Have pre-determined buy and sell prices based on your target ROE for your portfolio and also to cap losses.

Please feel free to add your own observations

I mostly play with SMLL and SFS these days.. Can make about Rs.200 per day from the amount of money I have. I have made about Rs. 3000 per month approximately. Im doin this while working.. So if someone is watching CSE and mainly do this I think he/she will be able to make more than this.

But Im stuck with CSD and EAST. Otherwise I could have earned a lot more.

My advice : Do not follow rumors. Do your own analysis before u buy stocks. (I purchased EAST and CSD because of a rumor)

An honest truth.. don't be upset with CSD, I also have this @ 14-15 range but I have done some analysis and it porved me I'm correct in my decision so even this goes to 12 I'll keep it.. but u should dispose when it exceeds ur stop loss..

It means that U can double ur portfolio in a year. Indicate whether u r a trader or an investor.

No it means you can do it SOMETIMES. 8% takes a bit of a luck as well. You can't keep up 8% a month throughout the year. Unlike investors traders can incur massive losses as well in the process. You have to account for those losses as well. Allthough I managed 6% in my first week and 5% in my second week, about 40% of my transactions were losses.
