The move follows a similar hike in tax on cigarettes last week and comes just weeks ahead of the government budget for 2012 to be presented next month.
The excise tax on a litre of alcohol spirits was raised by 60 rupees, S R Attygalle, director-general of fiscal policy at the finance ministry, said.
A notice on the finance ministry website said the excise duty on wine, locally made arrack, foreign liquor and malt liquor (beer) was increased with effect from October 25, 2011.
While the tax on wine, arrack and locally made foreign spirits was raised by 60 rupees a litre, that on beer was increased by only five rupees.
