Sri Lanka central bank pours oil on troubled waters
Nov 17, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's central bank said there may be room for former owners of seized assets to negotiate with competent authorities appointed by the state, after rating agencies raised fears of deteriorating property rights in the island.

How sad state of affairs of this country, after renaming "Gem of Indian Ocean" as "Miracle of Asia"?
Current rulers looks like a set of Headless Jokers, they don't seem to know what they are talking.
They expect people to eat their shit.

true that takeover bill not healthy for investment .But same time the LBO 's attempt to over sensationalize the issue is also not appropriate.

Present Government showed poor professionalism again. bringing this as an emergency bill, This will destroy what we achieve during past, with huge infrastructure development projects and investor favorable policies.

During last couple of years government turned into more stubborn and arrogant entity and misuse the huge mandate given by the people. I think our political system heading to a Chinese method, with people have no freedom to do any thing against government Junta's desire.
few examples;

1. Private sector pension scheme
2.Banning news web sites
3.Expropriation bill
4. Banning Wheat flour- Stupid idiots want to decide what we eat Evil or Very Mad

These are the things what we attempted to do and failed once in 70s. unfortunately history seems being repeated. Crying or Very sad Evil or Very Mad

The thing is, the government doesn't really need this bill to take over these businesses, or run down warehouses, there are already provisions in the constitution to do this.

What people should watch and read should be decided by the them selves, not by the government so as what people should eat and wear. by the way do you think State media like ITN,Rupavahini,SLBC,Lakehouse papers follow the principals of journalism, Razz .

If you open your eyes a bit, the intention of the government is clear, they tamed most of electronic and mass media including Maharajah network. The only media they couldn't control is this online media, now which they've touched. Of cause it's obvious that many of the websites are mudslinging bull shit, but banning them is not the solution for my eyes(I'm not anti UPFA or Pro-UPFA) and banning web sites is the Chinese ugly way. I think any average person would think in that way.

But it's obvious that there are plenty of people, even if the Government shit on their mouth, they will eat it thinking it's a Chocolate Porridge, and will invite others to eat it too.

P:S: If any one turned your TV on and check new channels CCTV, CSN- Please check who are the owners/share holders- and get an idea on media infiltration.

Yes, we should give full credit to the GOV who ended the 30 years LTTE terrorism and MR's name will be written in history with Golden Letters.

But if carefully see the developing situation especially since last 2 years, UPFA has 2/3 Parliament majority and Executive presidency. So that theoretically the can change any low at any time, If they want they can make Sri Lanka a full Marxist country by freezing all the assets owned by public.

I think GOV have gone mad with this unlimited power and now doing nonsense without thinking the consequence, unfortunately no powerful opposition nor civil societies left to check these acts. This is the consequence of having extreme power, we saw the same behavior from JR from 1977-1988, He amended the constitution once to take his henchmen to parliament. as I remember 3rd or 4th amendment.

Well said Wildbear.
Basically all the sectors are corrupted in Sri Lanka.
I do not want to go further, because then this topic become as a political debate.
Hope time will change every thing.

That's just nonsense. Media shouldn't be allowed to write utter and absolute bullshit and get away with it. Half the crap the so called internet media writes is made up. Here's a simple example.

Softlogic Finance Company facing financial crisis

Softlogic Finance Company is facing a threat of a financial meltdown, a senior official from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka said.

The crisis is due to the financial mismanagement on the part of the company’s Managing Director Ifthikar Ahamed. He had served at the NDB Bank and was removed from the institution due to a financial fraud.
Although the Central Bank should have carried out an inquiry into the appointment of a person with such a notorious background into the board of a financial institution, such an inquiry has not yet been conducted.
A proper investigation is not being carried out into the company due to the close friendship between the head of Softlogic Ashoka Pathirage and Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal.

Ashoka Pathirage is also closely affiliated to several senior members of the government and makes monthly payments to several government and opposition politicians on a request made by a senior government official.

The senior official from the Central Bank who gave us the information said there was a threat of about 10 financial institutions facing financial meltdowns like the Ceylinco Group due to financial irregularities.

http://www.lankanewsweb.com/english/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=132:softlogic-finance-company-facing-financial-crisis&catid=45:business&Itemid=27

So according to that softlogic finance is about to go bankrupt. This was published on 10 September 2011.

But read this.

RAM Ratings Lanka has assigned respective long- and short-term financial institution ratings of BBB- and P3 to Softlogic Finance PLC (“SLF” or “the Company”); the outlook on the long-term rating is stable. The ratings are premised upon the improvement in its market position while maintaining its asset quality at a level that commensurate with the BBB-rating category. Moreover, the ratings are also upheld by the adequate asset quality, performance, capitalisation and liquidity while being tempered by moderate funding and aggressive loan growth.

http://www.lbo.lk/fullstory.php?nid=2004736443

That came out on the 24th october. So it's pretty clear who's trying to feed shit to whom Wink

mono, you seem to be very disturbed of some comments made.

We believe that we are living in a democratic country, Aren't we?

Its true media should act with responsibility, but banning web sites is an attack on Fundamental rights to information, which is undemocratic and extreme Markxism.

If media behave in an unhealthy manner, use the legal framework. When one or two get punished, others will get corrected automatically.

People are clearly not in a position to decide which news is made up and what isn't. They simply don't have enough information at their disposal to do this. What you can have is the media being responsible and regulating themselves, but that clearly doesn't happen here. especially when it comes to internet media. In that case either the government or some other body, ideally independent, should regulate them. We do this with just about everything from telecommunication to pharmaceuticals. Media should not be above and beyond that. Just forget about everything, even LBO was trying to create/reinforce rumors about JKH being expropriated.
