Leading Hotel Associations, Tour Operators, and Travel Associations commends steps being taken by the government to promote tourism and express optimism in the growth of tourist industry in Sri Lanka.

Anura Lokuhetty, President of the Tourist Hotels Association says that the year 2011 was a wonderful year for tourism in Sri Lanka which surpassed the targets set for the year and the foreign exchange revenue recorded a 50% increase compared to the revenue earned in the year 2010. He says that this year’s tourist arrivals will exceed one million. He states that Western are predominant markets for the country while arrivals from other markets are also improving. He points out that China has become a big outbound market and proper marketing should be done in such countries to increase arrivals from those countries.

Mr. Lokuhetty says that Western and Eastern Europe is bread and butter of Sri Lanka’s tourism and this position should be preserved and attention should be further focused in developing these markets. He says that many of the hotels in the country are under refurbishment now and 800 to 900 rooms will become available this year upon completion of refurbishment and says that additional 500 rooms should be made available this year.

The President of the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators Nilmin Nanayakkara says that the Association has planned to participate in many Trade Fairs globally to promote Sri Lanka tourism. He also states that China is a very large catchment area and the destination itself is fast growing for outbound holidays, and emphasizes that the tourist industry should employ more personnel who could speak the Chinese language to tap a major share of this market. He says that attention should be focused to tap the fast growing markets while consolidating the traditional markets. He also emphasizes that attention should be focused to hold MICE programmes, Meetings and Conferences in the low seasons which are May-June and October-November

Not only in 2012. Tourist arrival YOY average increase is calculated @25% to 2016

2011 - 800,000
2012 - 1,000,000
2013 - 1,250,000
2014 - 1,550,000
2015 - 1,950,000
2016 - 2,500,000

This is not a unrealistic targets unless Europe hit extremely bad. Sri Lankan government deliberately giving a good promotion and also Sri Lanka is put in top list of world famous tourist magazines.
Good time to enter into leisure industries.

Leisure groups/sectors like Ahun , LOLC, REEF is expanding very strongly.

Ahun going to have 2 big projects with Six Sense
LOLC aquired 5 hotels - Riverina, Eden, Club Palm, former Jetwin Tropical villas, Dickwella
REEF - Kalpitiya, Waskaduwa, Kalpitiya Villas, and planing another one in Pasikuda

I can't understand why other groups (JKH, GREG,...) not going into leisure projects. At least JKH has good land bank. But it would be very much costly if someone is hoping to enter to the sector in 2016. For an example REEF bought Kalpitiya land at very much cheap price. But @2016 that land will be 5 times than the price they bought.

Even if the recession worsens in the West, I do not think we will have to worry about.

Comparatively we have lot of places and things to offer in this country although we did not use and promote them like they do in Thailand and Malaysia.

They get 40 million visitors per year ( T-15 & M-25) when we become overjoyed by seeing 1 million. To make it double we need a traffic shift of just 2 % , which is highly possible. Most of the Thai and Malay bound visitors are regular tourists travel each year and the need new places to go in Asia.

There is a popular myth that most of them go to Thailand for sex tourism and we cannot offer such a service here to attract them. If you go to Bangkok you can see many many old and young couples and families with little kids visit there all the times.

I think that there is a developing trend that they first go to Thailand , spent few days there and take Colombo bound plane to stay rest of their vacation here. When they come here it will be a good indirect marketing if we provide better and quality service here in Sri Lanka.

Thanks for valuable data.

JKH already has biggest number of hotels. They are refurbishing those now. In addition to that they are planing a five star hotel colombo.

Not only tourist arrival. Room rates are also increasing which show a clear demand and great future for the industries
Last year during the same period Citrus hikkaduwa room's price was 130USD. But now it has jumped to 35% to 175USD.

This is same to all the resorts in SL. Sector would be delighted to see rupee devaluation.
