The following could be the reasons for the Market being down:

1. Due to the Earthquake & Tsunami in Japan
2. Due to the issue in Libya

OR

3. The foreign investors & big local investors made there money from the Sri Lankan Market(CSE) and don't see a brighter future in terms of profit so decide to withdraw gradually and move in to higher profit making markets.
4. Due to the IPO's (which I highly doubt).
5. Loss of confidence.

or please list down more reasons we could think of, for this RED market so that our viewers could have reason to blame their losses.

Big Brokers have been promoting our market highly during last few months.so they realised that foreigners are not interested on buying highly valued stocks in our market. Finally...now all the big stock brokers in our country want to bring down the market to a level where they can sell it to foreigners.

Remember at one time nearly 75% of Sri Lankan stocks were Penny Stocks to international investors now they are worried they want to bring it down and regain profits making our stocks to become penny stocks again.
A penny stock is less that US $ 1 (less than Rs.110).

If you speak to any stock broker in the country all of them will say market is overpriced, stocks are highly valued.market is overheated...all this is false they are trying to create a fear and bring down the market to get foreigners.

Lankan economy has a bright future and companies do make profits. No denying.
But the problem is stocks are too expensive going at high earning multiples. So only retail investors and your pension fund are pumping money.
In the last 2 years. Even if you invested in a demolished hotel you got 100% in the market. That's why everybody is talking when is the next this rally, that rally.
For a sustainable growth the price multiple should come to something like 12. Banks will not have a noticeable growth this year.
This year I think the blue chip share prices will remain the same through out the year or lower as somebody said.
Don't worry your pension fund will clean up the mess. They even pump the losing Air company. What a thought. Very Happy

Valid point Guru.. but I doubt our shares will go back to penny value or I atleast hope it won't but I believe that it needs to look a little more attractive for big players that includes foreign Investors.

guru, then the easiest way to make penny stocks is to split all the 200 and plus worth shares to 100 worth pieces.

I dont think in general foreign funds will return to CSE anytime soon and specially where most of the existing foreign funds already made huge profits and willing to exit.
In the world, the latest trend of develop countries hedge funds is to move away from emerging markets and invest in multi billions dollar companies in their own countries. Ex GE, CITI group, BP.

This trend also gives a negative impact on CSE.

If we just talk about emerging markets. Sri Lankan stock market already has quite a high mileage on its clock. If I'm a director of a hedge fund I would go to singapore market rather colombo.
