Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena, astrologer to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and a former working director at the National Savings Bank (NSB), says the President on Thursday visited his residence in Galle and praised him for being the first to resign from the NSB board over the controversial share transaction with The Finance Co (TFC), setting an example to others.
In a telephone interview with the Business Times, he said the President was on his way to attend a funeral of his relative in the area. He said that he has received thousands of letters from the people including politicians, scholars and prominent persons praising him for his honesty. Mr. Abeygunawardena noted that although he tried his best within the board to stop the share transaction, his efforts failed.
He said that he has expressed his opposition against the transaction twice when it came up for discussions at board meetings. But despite all these objections, the deal had been finalized. He pointed out that this transaction was not done in a transparent and credible manner and those who were involved in the deal should be punished after a proper investigation.
He revealed that he has handed over the vehicle, official residence and all items in the NSB inventory given to him, soon after his resignation. Responding to a question on the planetary position of the country especially on the economy and finance, he said that the transition of The Jupiter transit that took place on Thursday, May 17 at 6.30 pm was beneficial for Sri Lanka and it will bring prosperity to the country especially for the president. Exposing of illegal deals and corruption was a major signal towards this end, he said.
