High taxes on motor vehicles will continue Sunday Times 10th June

The recent levies on motor vehicle imports will not be relaxed for the next three years, a senior government official has said.

Treasury Secretary P.B. Jayasundera told motor vehicle importers that levies would continue because the government wanted to curtail the outflow of foreign exchange.

The Vehicle Importers Association led by its President Sampath Merinchchige met Dr. Jayasundera to discuss matters arising from the recently increased levies on motor vehicle imports.

Mr. Merinchchige told the Sunday Times that according to Dr. Jayasundera, the vehicle import bill for last year had exceeded seven billion US dollars.

He also quoted Dr. Jayasundera as saying the government was planning to impose stricter controls on individuals importing motor vehicles.

Some of the motor sector share are trading below their NAV and PE of around 2 . How much more should it drop? These shares have dropped more than necessary to reflect their earning drop due to tax increase.

DIMO NAV is around 800 and it EPS potential for the next few quarters can be Rs 35+ due to their portfolio and PE is less than 2 now. UML and COLO also around PE of 2+. DIMO and UML is paying dividend of over 5% presently.

People seems to have reacted too much and maybe some panic sellers will react further. Bear is making people over react.

I seriously doubt they can go for that long with these high taxes. There are so many other non apparent factors to consider.

IMHO they will abolish the tax by mid 2013 before the provincial body and expected president election.

There is a point what he has said. But the problem is all these rules and regulations apply to ordinary poeple only.

Exactly! By the next presidential election, all of these taxes will come down! A cheap parlour trick! Well its like 2007 again for this industry. Go back to the charts and see where the motor index was in 2007, before the taxes were bought down from all time high!

This could be good sign! Trade Defecit could be narrowed! And we could see some positive signs. But these taxes will come down again, once these greedy buggers pockets are drying out! Its a big time revenue to the politicos!
