Sections of the media have been accused of creating bad perceptions about the country by highlighting too many negative on-goings in the economy.
Several years ago when the media highlighted how some tea growers were offering sticks and stones at the auctions, the media was blamed for creating a bad picture that would tarnish the image of the Ceylon Tea brand.
When problems in the tourism sector were highlighted, again, the media was accused of not being patriotic enough and that the media should only highlight stories that would attract tourists!
When our reserves were being sold away to keep the rupee artificially strong, again the media was blamed for the negative picture the international investor community would see.
We are seeing the same thing now at the stock exchange. Attempts by the media to highlight the misconduct of investors and brokers are being touted as anti-government.
We also recently saw a top government official blaming the media for over-reporting crimes! Patriotism to cover-up misdeeds is not patriotism.
