Piramal overcomes rising energy cost to grow half-year profit
Strong growth of exports to Australia and New Zealand
November 3, 2012, 5:30 pm
The Island

Despite a heavy increase of energy cost, Piramal Glass PLC has increased its half year profits for the current fiscal period thanks to a good performance of its exports segment including a thrust in the new Australian and New Zealand markets, the company said in a news release to the Colombo Stock Exchange.

In a news release incorporating half year results for 2012/13, Piramal said that turnover was up 8% to Rs.2.39 billion while the profit after-tax had grown 9% to Rs.414 million from Rs.384 million during the comparative period the previous year.

The company had to contend with higher furnace oil and LPG prices during the period under review driving up manufacturing cost.

While export performance was good with sales to the Australian and New Zealand markets rising to 28% of exports from 8% the previous year, there had been a dip in local sales particularly to the liquor and food sector.

Piramal which had developed a new range of liquor bottles in different colours for the Indian and Australian markets was confident that there was clear potential in the domestic market despite the overall dip in growth.

The domestic market was worth nearly Rs.2 billion to the company during the half year under review.

Upward production momentum had continued with volumes during the half year up from the corresponding production a year earlier. Growth in production efficiencies helped the company to improve profitability in the face of substantial cost escalations.

Piramal’s CEO/MD Sanjay Tiwari said that management focus on a manufacturing excellence program would enable their new factory at Horana, which has already reached level two in manufacturing excellence, to reach level three by the end of the current financial year.
