Nov 19, 2012 (LBT) - Bourse opened the week witnessing selling pressure as both indices closed shedding over 50 points. However, a staggering turnover above 3.8bn was recorded solely owing to a few strategic deals. The benchmark index shed 52.39 points to close at 5,503 whilst the more liquid MPI gained 57.77 points to close at 5,086.Total turnover for the day was 431mn ( Approx. USD 30.1mn) .Total volume traded for the day was over 471.9mn.

Deals took place on BIL and GREG which in turn contributed over 93% of the day’s turnover. BIL saw 2 blocks totaling 353,000,000 shares change hands at Rs.5.50 whilst GREG traded 101,000,000 shares at Rs.16.70. GREG’s quantity amounted to 28.9% of the stated capital whilst BIL exchanged 18.9% of the stated capital. The 2 respective counters saw selling pressure on normal trading board and closed the day shedding 3.01% and 4.76%.

Banking sector cap HNB also witnessed a block trade during the day as it traded 218,577 shares at Rs.154.90. Market heavyweight JKH saw selling pressure during the day to close at Rs.216 after pumping over 21mn towards the day’s tally.

Further, caps such as SHL,SEYB.X,NDB and CARS attracted High net worth and Institutional interest to trade decent volumes for the day. Retail activity was minimal during the day as retail investors continued to take a wait and see approach. SEMB.N,LOFC and ATL topped trading volumes whilst LPRT emerged as the top gainer on thin trade.

I think after today's fall it wiped out the 5 day gains ) index wise) before the tiny budget run. Some share which reported good earning or held last quarter earnings, seems to be trading lower than before the run. Ex : LFIN, NTB, RICH etc

Indices plunged yesterday on heightened selling pressure at the Colombo bourse, taking turnover levels to Rs. 3.86 billion with a net foreign outflow of Rs. 1.66 billion.

The All Share Price Index fell 0.94 percent, down 52.39 points to close at 5,503.93. The Milanka Price Index of more liquid stocks closed 1.12 percent lower, down 57.77 points at 5,086.55 while the S&P SL20 closed at 3,006.47, down 0.73 percent, or 22.21 points lower.

"Selling pressure on several large caps dragged the indices sharply lower. Market turnover crossed the Rs. 3bn threshold, mainly on the back of crossings on BIL, GREG, and HNB, which collectively accounted for around 95 percent of turnover," John Keells Stockbrokers said.

Foreign selling amounted to Rs. 1.7 billion leading to a net outflow of Rs. 1.66 billion yesterday.

GREG (Environment Resources Investments PLC) saw 101 million shares change hands in an off market deal at Rs. 16.70 each.

Two parcels of BIL (Browns Investments PLC) totalling 353 million shares changed at Rs. 5.50 per share.

A crossing of 218,577 HNB shares took place at Rs. 154.90 per share.

"Amongst the losers for the day were Beruwela Walk Inn, George Steuart Finance and Kelsey Developments which declined by 27.3 percent, 19.0 percent and 11.8 percent offsetting gains in Lake House Printers, Industrial Asphalts and Infrastructure Developers which advanced by 14.8 percent, 8.8 percent and 8.2 percent respectively," DNH Financial said.
