Let me come to the point with a bit of elaboration..

Some companies are right factories, always expecting the shareholders to fund their projects. Few others show the results and then ask to participate for the balance they need..

Then there are companies who keep reserves, do investments with the money they earn and grow their investments. Then for any kind of expansions, diversifications, etc.. they use this money. These companies rarely go for rights issues.

The attraction for rights may seen for prices which are deemed bargain for the current market price. If a share is trading at 100, the rights are issued in 1 right for 2 shares @ 70, it may seem attractive. However, there were many occasions when extensive number of rights were announced, i.e. 14 rights for 1 or 2 existing shares; it took the market by surprise.

But buying rights depend on the intention as well. You can buy rights from the trading floor and trade.. The demand or the value may depend on the attraction of the rights price as well as the no of rights available in the market. Then you can buy shares before XR date and claim your entitlement. This again you can either trade or convert to shares on the exercise date.

Buying shares itself is risky.
But it is more risky to buy shares from a rights issue because, after the rights issue, the number of shares in circulation increases. This sometimes upsets the Demand:Supply equilibrium and makes it difficult to predict the post-issue price.
However, the rewards can also be commensurate with the risks.

@hasarel: I assume that you've bought COCO Rights. If so, you will need to pay an additional Rs 35 (to convert each COCO.R into a Voting share) or Rs 28 (to convert COCO.R1 into Non-voting shares).
If you can't resell by 6th December: You can still decide not to pay, in which case you would lose the money that you have to pay for the Rights.

In future, I would suggest that you obtain advice from a knowledgeable friend before buying or selling shares; there are many helpful individuals on this forum... You would not walk into a shop and buy an object without knowing what it is, would you?
