Why some are so happy to look up from the bottom of the well and rejoice so loud ? Shocked
For a change, try to look down from the top and see how little more we need to go down to hit the bottom and then do something earnestly to change the trend. Cool

Sri Lanka has been placed 79th position among 176 countries in the annual Global Corruption Perception Index (CPI) released by Transparency International (TI) today.

Sri Lanka, among south Asian countries ranks second above India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Only Bhutan has fared better than Sri Lanka. In Asia Pacific region Sri Lanka is ranked number 11.

Transparency International Sri Lanka believes there is a need to strengthen the anti – corruption mechanisms in Sri Lanka, TI said.

The Index, which focuses on corruption in the public sector, is conducted by Transparency International (TI), the global civil society organization leading the fight against corruption. The CPI, though perceptional, has been accepted as the most recognized and often quoted international index on corruption, TI added.

Two thirds of the 176 countries ranked in the 2012 index score below 50, on a scale from 0 (perceived to be highly corrupt) to 100 (perceived to be very clean), showing that public institutions need to be more transparent, and powerful officials more accountable, the TI in Sri Lanka said in a statement.

Since Sri Lanka has scored below 50, it is apparent that the country is yet among those who were unable to minimize the level of corruption in the public sector. Thus A growing outcry over corrupt governments forced several leaders from office last year, but as the dust has cleared it has become apparent that the levels of bribery, abuse of power and secret dealings are still very high in many countries. Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index 2012 shows corruption continues to ravage societies around the world, " the TI said.

"Governments need to integrate anti-corruption actions into all public decision-making. Priorities include better rules on lobbying and political financing, making public spending and contracting more transparent and making public bodies more accountable to people," said Huguette Labelle, the Chair of Transparency International.

"After a year of focus on corruption, we expect governments to take a tougher stance against the abuse of power. The Corruption Perceptions Index 2012 results demonstrate that societies continue to pay the high cost of corruption," Labelle said.

In the Corruption Perceptions Index 2012 Denmark, Finland and New Zealand tie for first place with scores of 90, helped by strong access to information systems and rules governing the behavior of those in public positions. Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia once again cling to the bottom rung of the index. In these countries the lack of accountable leadership and effective public institutions underscore the need to take a much stronger stance against corruption.

This year Transparency International has changed the methodology for the Corruption Perceptions Index, allowing for year-over-year comparisons for all editions published from 2012 onward.

So what you says is coming to 79th position from 86th position with in 12 months in the transparency index is not a good sigh.............

1) Doesn't it says that the corruption has reduces to some extend.
2) Doesn't this means that we can go to 50 level at least by 2016.
3) Has other countries like japan and Malaysia came to this level (Economically) with in 2-3 years or has it takens several decades.

@ Amal

If we were prudent we could do lot after the 2009. What I believe is we have failed to capitalize the opportunity. You cannot ride far with this system any more. Now it is at the verge of collapse ...at least we need to patch the holes temporally although the total revamp is essential.

Good one... 7 points up from the deep well should be some good sign.. But do we see the govt. doing prudent things in placin the country in 70th position at least by next year?
On the other hand, racing car taxes have been reduced.. For what? For their own ppl to race Twisted Evil So when ppl are starving without food, when they are moaning unable to buy a vehicle, Some ppl RACE... That's absurd thinking..

The person who gave the leadership to rescue this country need to have a more transparent policy in putting the common man's needs on priority than developing the racing industry in this country cuz its a tourist attraction... I'm not saying the thought is bad, but priority wise I find it difficult to place before ppl's need..

U all can see what sri lanka has gained after 2009. FDI are at all time high if i am not mistaken. How many famous hotel brands sighed agreements. These are the achievements. U cant make things over night. This is a good era for Asian countries. All most all the internal companies investing heavily in new ventures.

Then some body may say why sri lanka need 7 star hotels since there are lot of people who cant even afford a 3 star. That is bullshit. We need Krrish type investments at least for Best companies to open their offices.

Tax structure is relaxing in every budget. But Dont compare it with canada Evil or Very Mad

Any way.

@ Wiki.

Then tell us where we went wrong after 2009.

Corruption Perception index may be another DEAD ROPE given by international organizations

All politicians and Bureaucrats know very well how much they have earned so far.Now they might think they can earn more

Transparency International "KAPANNA BERI ATHA IBINAWA'DA?

Govt has already made a BLUNDER by impeachment. This may be another
DEAD ROPE
