4-5 years ago most of the European banks offered holiday loans to customers up to 6-8 thousand euros at 5-7%
Now average holiday loan is around 3-4 thousand at 8-11%

Yes they like what we have-Sun,beaches ,wildlife,culture but high unemployment and recession Europe and over priced hotels in Sri lanka......

Do these things tell us that over hotels are over-priced at the moment for holidaymakers and also for us in CSE.

Still Colombo lacks what tourists need.
No night life except few high priced reserved places with high class crowd.
The town becomes a dead city after 7.00. In real cities super malls become active after Sunset. Here they go home after 7.30.

Yes, we need a clean and healthy town. But we have to provide spaces for business owners and shelter and facilities for working crowd to keep them alive and busy till late night.
Many people in our country still think nightlife mean sex.

Town planners should visit places like ChiangMai in Thailand to see how locals engaged in the industry and tourists spend their vacation leisurely and happily, walking all over the places till 1 or 2 a.m. Open air eating places, clean food with different favors and choices, handicraft stalls, apparel stalls, fancy items, fish massage, disco , music , pubs , open theater dramas , open area leg massage, 7/11 and bigger super markets full with local and foreign tourists ... all within walking distance to your hotel. Hotels from 6 stars to affordable 3 stars and to family managed guest houses are available catering all range of visitors.

ChiangMai is located in hill country, 700 km away from Bangkok. Cost to reach there is 550 Baht (2200 LKR) one way by tourist class a/c bus or train or 900-1100 Baht by plane.

there was a plan to develop Maskeliya as a hill country tourist town.I think sri lanka's hill country is a real tourist attraction that we did not pay much attention. Nuwara ellia could be Sri lanka's Chiangmai if relevant authorities pay more attention to develop necessary infrastructure rather than thinking of minimum room rates.

Agree with you both, I still cannot understand why we increased the hotel prices so early. There should be a bare minimum but should not be expensive as today. Crying or Very sad

Still Sri lanka is not ready to tap the high end tourists.
Casino, nightlife etc are categorised as bad things by our society. Yes as Chinwi said majority still think everything mean “Sex”. We always always like to show to world that we are a well disciplined nation. But daily newspapers tell something else.
All above activities should be legalised in a strict manner

Development should go hand to hand with cultural/moral/ethical development also.All above developmental methods have been done by most of the so called developed countries and MOST IMPORTANTLY now Some of those countries want to change those methods as they have understood this type of development has very high cost to pay in long term.So we should lesson from their experiences.
By the way tourism is not the only way to develop a country.

I am sure the tourism related authorities have been to many tourist destinations in the world. In Asia, Thailand teaches us how to attract the tourist to world heritages & entertainment places as well. Many appreciate the basic needs, safety, tour arrangements & the hospitality from the people while protecting the religious values at most venerable places.
Our tourist promotion bureau can learn much to develop the setup here from Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Auyththaya, Sukhothai destinations. I feel we are still far behind & slow moving planning & implementation concerned. Generated revenue is the major economic contributor over the number of arrivals.
