Cairn Lanka abondons a well
Cairn Lanka, a unit of Cairn India Limited says, it has abandoned the drilling activities in one of the wells in the Gulf of Mannar Basin, as it has not found oil or gas in the respective well.

In a statement issued the firm said, “The well encountered multiple thick high quality reservoir sands, which were not hydrocarbon bearing”.

Accordingly, the Oil Explorer has plugged and abandoned the well and announced that the rig is also being demobilized.

This has been notified to Sri Lanka’s Petroleum Resource Development Secretariat.

The latest announcement from Cairn comes as the Island nation is gearing up to start its second petroleum licensing round early this month,

Sri Lanka is planning to hold three roads shows in global cities such as Houston, London and Singapore to attract potential bidders to award the remaining oil blocks.

Sri Lanka Cairn draws blank on fourth well

Mar 01, 2013 (LBO) - Cairn Lanka (Pvt) Ltd has not found any oil in its fourth exploration well, its parent company said in a stock exchange filing.

Cairn India said the well found "thick high quality re servoir sands, which were not hydrocarbon bearing," and it was plugged and abandoned.
The data from the well and another two wells where petroleum was found will be used to fully understand the potential of the block, the firm said.

Analysis of data is expected to take at least until the first quarter of next year, according to earlier statements.

Cairn Lanka’s fourth oil exploratory well in Mannar Basin finds…

Cairn India earlier this week said the fourth oil exploratory well on Sri Lanka’s side of the Mannar Basin did not contain hydrocarbon deposits.

"Pursuant to the conduct of phase 2 exploration in Sri Lanka, Cairn Lanka Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cairn India Ltd, acquired 600sqkm of 3D seismic in Block SL 2007-01-001 in early 2012 and spud its fourth exploration well in the block on 2 February, 2013.The well encountered multiple thick high quality reservoir sands, which were not hydrocarbon bearing.

The data from this well along with the results of the prior two discoveries are being integrated to fully understand the future block potential. The well was plugged and abandoned and the rig is being demobilized. The Petroleum Resource Development Secretariat (PRDS) of Sri Lanka is being notified," Cairn India said in a statement on Thursday (28).

The Mannar Basin hosts potential discoveries which were made by Cairn Lanka Private Limited in 2011. The first well (CLPL-Dorado-91H/1z) found gas condensate in Cretaceous aged sandstones. The second well (CLPL-Barracuda-1G/1) made a separate gas condensate discovery. A third well discovered a dry hole.

Cairn Lanka won the country’s first oil exploratory licence in 2007.

The government is opening a second round of licensing with a road show in the US on March 7.

Thirteen blocks have been designated in the Sri Lankan sectors of the Cauvery and Mannar Basins, located to the north and west of Sri Lanka, respectively. A further six ‘Joint Study Blocks’ have been designated in the unexplored, largely deep water areas to the east and south of Sri Lanka. The number of blocks to be offered in the Second Licensing Round will be located in the Cauvery and Mannar Basins and will be announced shortly, the government announced last month.
