Cairn Lanka, a unit of Cairn India Limited says, it has abandoned the drilling activities in one of the wells in the Gulf of Mannar Basin, as it has not found oil or gas in the respective well.
In a statement issued the firm said, “The well encountered multiple thick high quality reservoir sands, which were not hydrocarbon bearing”.
Accordingly, the Oil Explorer has plugged and abandoned the well and announced that the rig is also being demobilized.
This has been notified to Sri Lanka’s Petroleum Resource Development Secretariat.
The latest announcement from Cairn comes as the Island nation is gearing up to start its second petroleum licensing round early this month,
Sri Lanka is planning to hold three roads shows in global cities such as Houston, London and Singapore to attract potential bidders to award the remaining oil blocks.
