The registration fee for several categories of motor vehicles has risen by 200%, following a government revision of tariffs last month. Registration fee for cars up to 1,600 engine capacity (CC) and dual purpose vehicles is now Rs 15,000, from Rs. 5,000; for special purpose vehicles it’s Rs 20,000 from Rs 10,000; for lorry trailers it’s Rs 7,000 from Rs 2,500; and for tractor trailer/bowsers it’s Rs 6,000 from Rs 1,000 (a 500% increase).

Registration fee for motorcycles is Rs 2,000 from Rs. 1,500; for motor tricycles it’s Rs 2,500 from Rs 2,000; for motor lorry prime movers it’s Rs 15,000 from Rs 10,000.

No change for lorries and coaches, which remain at Rs 3,000; and for ambulances and hearses which remain at Rs 10,000.

New categories have been created, while other categories have been amalgamated into one. For instance, registration fee for cars exceeding 1,000 CC is Rs 20,000.

Sri Lanka’s BMW luxury car registration up 280 %, small cars down

Sri Lanka’s registrations of BMW luxury cars have risen 280 per cent in January 2013 from a year ago following increases to taxes on some vehicle categories while new registrations of small Maruti/Suzuki models dropped 84 per cent, data compiled by motor traders revealed.

They disclosed that registrations of brand new BMW cars rose by 281 per cent to 84 in January 2013 from 22 a year earlier with 82 being 5-Series models.

Registrations of brand new Mercedes cars rose 23 per cent in January 2013 from a year earlier.

New registrations of Maruti-Suzuki cars owned by less affluent citizens fell 84 per cent to 190 in January 2013 from a year earlier, the data showed.

Taxes on small cars were raised twice, drawing protests from Indian automakers that it was targeted at them.
