Arrangements are being made to open the 26 kilometre-long Katunayake - Kelaniya Expressway built at a cost of 291 million US dollars next August, the Ministry of Economic Development said.

The Ports and Highways Ministry commenced construction of the express way in 2009.

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa who inspected the expressway recently instructed the relevant officials to plant trees native to Sri Lanka on either side of the road after conserving the marshy lands on either side of the expressway and cleaning the Dutch Canal, the ministry said.

Rajapaksa said that the true benefits of the Southern and Colombo-Katunayake Expressways can be reaped only after the completion of the Northern Expressway the initial work on which has already begun.

Plans have been drawn up to construct the Northern Expressway in three stages - the first from Enderamulla to Ambepussa, the second from Meerigama to Pellandeniya and the third from Ambepussa to Kandy.

Participating in a discussion at the Parliamentary complex on the construction of this expressway, Minister Basil Rajapaksa said the planning has to be done causing the least harm to human settlements and the natural environment.

The technical report on the expressway construction, the environmental report, surveying the area, geological aspects and the resettlement of people who will be displaced as a result of land acquisition for the purpose are now being studied since the project is expected to meet the needs that would arise by 2030.

Minister of Social Services Felix Perera, Highways Project Minister Nirmala Kotalawala, Deputy Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Lasantha Alagiyawanna, MP Sudarshani Fernandopulle, Western Provincial Council Minister Nimal Lansa and Ports and Highways Ministry Secretary Ranjith Premasiri were among those who attended the discussions.

This and another Six lane one around the country could have been built without borrowing a cent from any, if we have saved the Fuel Hedge money.
I think the word White Elephant is too modest. Very Happy

These roads are needed to the country but unfortunately the government is building these roads by massive loans. The actually needed amount is around 1/3 from the total cost rest is taken by Sri lankan Po...........tians (1/3) and the main contractor (Chinese), They(MR) have already sold the country to CHINA.

Even in India Pak same story. You cant expect a transparent governance from a third world country.

Same thing happen in Mahawali project also where all the involved parties became millions rather billionaires. In 2001 - 2004 era how many companies were privatized for pea nuts. Sri lanka insurance , Sevanagala an all.

Do you have a solution .................................No

The best option is.
Make educate the people in the country to a level where you dont send deleted. MS fellows to Parliament just because of the marketing campaigns in the election.
So we eed these project even at the expense of the bribes and mis managements.

People who preach about corruption and selling the country by the current regime have no idea about what happened in this country for last 40- 50 years.

I was in Gam-udawa, Mahaweli and many other major scale development projects. The new set of people who shout against corruption cannot even think about those days. We saw what happen during privatization as Arena said. We know very well how a particular Govt. owned listed company was acquired by a particular person without spending a cent.

You do not know about the things happening in India , Thailand or UAE. Compared to other countries we are very much better. ( I have first hand info for those 3 places)

Those pundits who shout about rising debt do not say any word about rising GDP or wasted eleven years of Chandirika regime.

Katunayake Expressway to open in August Sri-lanka-gdp

They know everything but not something called Debt/GDP ratio :

Katunayake Expressway to open in August Sri-lanka-government-debt-to-gdp

According to the chart our GDP was 20b in 2005. My goodness. Which means US$1000 per capita. loweth na.

We can go for 100b GDP by 2016 If nothing happens worst.

Do you want some thing like Libiya case. You cant imagine when Libiya can wake again. They will be in a mess for another 25 years for sure and we dont have that much problems at the movement.

If you want to develop the country just work for 12 hours per day and ask others to do so. Dont vote like me......................lol

Sri lanka people have got used to corruption as they have no other option they justify it by telling so many things. What happened in Mahaweli and other development projects were also same. But no doubt Mahaweli development project is the best ever project in sri lanka it was a well planned project (Not like Hambantota port and air port). There were massive corruptions in Mahaweli as well but no way near to current corruption.

There are buggers who cry over each and every things. That is their duty and They only knows that to do.
Fortunately government does not care about these buggers. If you remember how many had told that LTTE terrorism could be defeated by military mission ? I think only handful. Finally when army was succeeding how many changed their tune ?
And government need not to worry about these buggers as majority of people do not care sayings of these buggers except for fun.
On the other hand government should reduce the corruption as much as possible for they will have to pay one way or the other for mismanagement of PUBLIC MONEY. We have witnessed the final fate of the most who mismanaged the public money.

Katunayake-Colombo expressway is a must do & long overdue infrastructure program. Full credit goes to this government for achieving it (at any cost). Going to Colombo is one of the very 1st things most tourists do in our country. Travelling on this expressway will give a good impression about the country. We must not forget how long it normally takes (depends on the time) to reach Peliyagoda junction from Katunayake (with all bikers, tuk tuks & all other reckless drivers).

Regarding the Mattala Airport. Concept is good but I’m surprised about the location. Of course it is good for the people around Hambantota but about 15 million people live at least 50 miles away from the Airport. Again all the major cities are located at least 100 miles away from the Airport. If they wanted a second airport then it should be in a place like Dambulla.
We do not need one Airport for Cargo, One airport for transit passengers, another airport for Aircraft maintenance etc etc.
A port city never needed an Airport. All the people in Sri Lanka have to go through a painful and long journey to get on to an Aircraft. Especially people in West, North, East, middle of the country.

Hambantota Port Probably the best project launch by this government. During Chadrika’s regime this was on card. However top level people in current regime went strongly against it. Rolling Eyes
I really hope we manage to clear the seabed around the port soon. It’s a huge challenge.

Overall this government should encourage more and more young people to go abroad for work. We should not discourage them by things like recent incident happened in Saudi Arabia.

Only remittance can rescue Sri Lanka in the short run.

Both of those parties come in to action when there was a market for patriocism. It was more of political agenda. There were people who genuinely believed that LTTE could be defeated militarily. Actually Sihala Urumaya and JVP got that idea from those people. To be fair for Sihala Urumaya and JVP, there were/are genuine people who believed in that.
And to be fair for majority of people who genuinely thought that LTTE could not defeated militarily it was actually not their own opinion...It was an opinion implanted on their minds by so called international community, tamil people who support Elaam and our ignorant lot including most of the politicians.
