(Reuters) - Sri Lankan stocks rose for a fifth straight session on Wednesday hitting a one-month high on foreign purchases of John Keells Holdings.

Local investors remained on the sidelines as yields in T-bills rose for a third straight week.

The main index ended 0.21 percent or 11.96 points higher at 5,734.82, its highest close since Feb. 19.

Foreign investors were net buyers of 209.7 million rupees worth of shares, extending the year-to-date net foreign inflow to 4.19 billion rupees worth of shares.

Yields on treasury bills rose for the third straight week at Wednesday's auction even though the central bank kept its key policy rates unchanged for a third month in a row.,

Analysts also said retailers were worried about the effect of allegations Sri Lanka faces at the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva over the conduct of its military in the final stages of the 2009 defeat of Tamil Tiger separatists.

Shares in conglomerate John Keells Holdings climbed 2.34 percent to a more than two-year high of 249.50 rupees. Turnover was 539.8 million rupees ($4.26 million), around half of this year's daily average of 1.02 billion rupees.

The rupee ended weaker at 126.74/80 to the dollar from Tuesday's close of 126.55/65.

Turnover for the day has declined to LKR540 mn

WRITTEN BY THARANGA SENARATNE

Mar 20, 2013 (LBT) - The market continued to inch upwards with the ASPI gaining 0.2% to end the session at 5735. Turnover declined to LKR540 mn with trading in John Keells Holdings and Seylan Bank(X) accounting for 39% of the day’s total. Gainers modestly outpaced losers with SMB Leasing(X), Associated Motor Finance, Kelsey Development rising by 33.3%, 15.4% and 14.1% and offsetting losses in Swadeshi Industrial, Asiri Surgical and Mercantile Shipping which declined by 39.0%, 14.0% and 12.5% respectively. Meanwhile, Global markets were mixed after Cypriot lawmakers comprehensively rejected a plan to tax savings as part of a crucial bailout deal, amid fears over the eurozone financial system.

While today’s market activity was still at a low ebb, we continue to advise investors against seeking speculative positions but focusing on quality companies that will generate double digit returns over a reasonable investment horizon. In terms of relative global performance, the Sri Lanka bourse has been underperforming most major markets on an YTD basis despite a generally robust domestic economy. This dichotomy we believe is likely to be corrected by firm performances of bluechip stocks, especially in the diversified, banking, f&b sectors. Consequently, we recommend a flight to quality strategy focusing on liquid growth stocks.

The uptick on the Colombo bourse continued yesterday on a turnover of Rs.539.7 million, down from the previous day’s Rs.933.55 million, with both indices up – the All Share by 11.96 points (0.21%) and S&P SL20 by 15.77 points (0.48%) with 107 gainers outpacing 88 losers while 116 counters closed flat.

Foreign purchases amounted to Rs. 233.98 million, resulting in a net inflow of Rs. 209.70 million.

Brokers said there was foreign buying interest in JKH, NDB, Commercial Bank (voting) and now DFCC which were the most traded stocks on the trading floor yesterday with all except NDB moving up in price.

"The ASPI ended higher amid gains in selected large cap counters. Activity levels continued to be dominated by trades on JKH which accounted for nearly 40% of market turnover, inclusive of crossings," John Keells Stockbrokers said.

JKH continued to surge gaining Rs.5.90 yesterday to close at Rs.249.70 on over 0.3 million shares traded on the floor between Rs.243.80 and Rs.249.70 contributing Rs.86.9 million to turnover.

Apart from the floor trades, there was a crossing of 0.5 million JKH at Rs.250 in a deal worth Rs.125 million. Brokers noted that the counter is now at a one-year high saying that the buying strength on this blue chip had confused some institutional and high net worth investors on profit taking on other blue chips.

There was also a crossing of nearly two million Seylan (non-voting) at Rs.36.30 in a deal worth Rs.72.4 million but there was no word on buyers and sellers.

On the trading floor Seylan (non-voting) closed Rs.1.30 up at Rs.37.50 on over 0.2 million shares done between Rs.36.40 and Rs.37.50 generating Rs.8.9 million turnover.

NDB was down Rs.1.70 to Rs.161 on over 0.1 million shares done between Rs.159 and Rs.162.10 generating a turnover of Rs.23.1 million while Commercial Bank (voting) gained 30 cents to close at Rs.114 on 0.2 million shares done between Rs.114.0 contributing Rs.229 million to turnover.

DFCC closed 90 cents up at Rs.124.60 on over 0.1 million shares done between Rs.123 and Rs.125.40 generating Rs.14.3 million turnover.

Other gainers among the most traded stocks included Carsons up Rs.9.80 to Rs.449.90 on 28,357 shares, Janashakthi up 60 cents to Rs.12.40 on million shares, HNB (voting) up Rs.1.20 to Rs.162.50 on 66,950 and Sampath up 80 cents to Rs.233 on 42,644 shares.

PC House also saw nearly 3.8 million shares traded closing 10 cents up at Rs.3.

Janashakthi announced a first interim dividend of Re.1 per share for 2013 XD from April 2 and payment on April 5 while Dialog announced a first and final dividend of 33 cents per share for 2012 after shareholder approval at an AGM on May 8. The share will trade XD from May 9 with payment on May 16.
