There was a particular article yesterday in Reuters, echoing export figures released by Sri Lanka's central bank, a 20% decline. Somehow that is completely inverse to what should happen with the Global economy steaming ahead, markets at historical highs and gold trading at 52 week low. I am not a fan of Obama, I went with Romney, but Obama gave a challenge to the country and asked manufacturing sector to double the 1 trillion yearly exports. US doesn't export much compared to its 17 trillion GDP, but the challenge to double that is a mammoth task, specially finding new markets. Somehow after four years in office he managed to achieve that target by 50%.
What I can't understand is what happened to Sri Lanka's manufacturing? This debt ridden infrastructure development doesn't last long unless manufacturing picks up and start paying the debt load. There's hardly a real export oriented manufacturing stock worth investing in Colombo exchange. Anybody has any ideas what the medium term plan to develop Sri Lanka’s export market? There are plenty of opportunities to export semi-processed goods to the US.

Loss GSP+ is part of the reason for the export decline.

Part of the other reason is that the economy is moving more towards a service base with BPOs and Tourism.

this is a very complicated thing.
bottom line reason behind all those issue is the people of this country.we can blame on politics, world economy, high rank officials. but as long as people not changing their attitude ...we will not able to develop sl

Biggest problem is our export prices are not competitive

Why labor cost is very high ?

High labor cost is mainly due to unproductive employment in the public sector

Public sector pay very high salaries without any work

Country is heading for a disaster
