British Airways is already suffering with low passengers and low revenue they may pull out from Sri Lanka if they are forced to Operate to MATTALA

Internationally when a country commission a international airport they first do the development of infrastructure and yet they offer loads of consesions to Airlines to operate to such airports

at MATTALA they offer 50% Handling charges rebate only .

In Sri Lanka Air craft handling charges is of the highest for a small ABA320 Aircraft the handling cahrges would be around 03 laks ( The handling is done by Sri Lankan Airlines and it is a monopoly government is not allowing any others to do the handling ) Landing and parking charges would be around 01 lak and fuel also they will have to take in at a high price .

When you consider all these factors plus other charges and the Licencee fees and Airport Tax ..To Operate to Sri Lanka these Airlines pay a heavy price - In india and other regional airports these charges are 30 % Less ..

The national Career Sri lankan Airlines - making heafty losses and at least they are showing these level of revenue in come through handling of these foreign Airlines they are making Huge profits Trillions a week but due to heavy losses in their operations these income is evaporated

All the Governments are failing the mother lanka -They make themselves and their families Rich Rich Richer ..Robbing the country ,,,Blue - Green - Red all the governments we had after 1977 failed this country ..

What's the use of maintaining large number of advisers, if they don't provide proper advice to the president. Most of these advisers are just puppets and the public money is just wasted on them.

No i dont agree with you with the present system he is the sole whole authority and without his yes cabinet does not do anything ..His friends and his family members friends and relatives appointed for almost all the positions .if anyone wink against his ones he/she will have to go home like what happens to BOC big boss..

He who gets all people appointed for his advisory positions not like Europe there us no set system here no policy neither it is the executive presidency which destroying the country with this all powers even if i become the HE i will do the same .
It is very very very dangerous to give all the powers to one person does not matter whether its CBK RANIL MAHINDA OR NAMAL ..This bloody system will have to be changed

Yes for any such big projects spending billions of revenue generated by loans for which we all are paying a huge prize we need to trible think ..the place ..the time ..the contractors ..the after effects ..and soo on ..

New galle high way also creating a hawok in environment ..
Do we need a country a desert place like saudi arabia with loads of high ways ?
Or do we need a country with fewer highways with lots of green and farmers enjoying ..?

When the country's extrenal debt is almost 80% of the the GDP, can we afford such white elephant projects more, just for the sake of creating legacy.

Major decisions like AIRPORT could have been taken considering overall situation.... considering whole countries peoples benefits.....
MATTALA is so biased... so poor.... purely political blunders..... * kind of destroying the country..... kind of ragging the most of the people country.... pleasing around 20% population.......

But for the case of Maagampura harbor.... I believe.. it could be a good one if they manage well.... work well.

So far we not need a second airport as a prime requirement, In BIA still we have the capacity to cater more with this facilities. As for a emergency Air strip they could develop Koggala or Rathmalna air field.

Sri Lanka to call tenders for duty free emporium in Mattala: minister

May 10, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka will tender a concession to operate a duty free shopping complex in the newly opened Mattala airport, aviation minister Priyankara Jayaratne said, in a move that could draw more passengers to the destination.
"I have instructed officials to call for tenders to set up the duty free shops as soon as possible," minister Jayaratne said.

"I agree that lack of duty free shops is a problem for some passengers."

Passengers from Middle East, who are mostly expat workers returning after months or years are reluctant to come via Mattala Rajapaksa airport because they cannot use their duty free allowance which can be up to 500 dollars, travel industry officials say.

At Katunayake international airport, duty free shops sell anything from a refrigerator to pressure cookers to cigarettes and alcohol.

UAE based Air Arabia, the first foreign airline to operate to the new airport has now suspended flights the airport.

But a government official said it is likely to resume flights by September. Fly Dubai, a UAE based carrier is also expected to fly to Mattala. State-run SriLankan and Mihin fly to Mattala now.

Jayaratne said a six member committee headed by civil aviation ministry’s secretary Ravindra Ruberu has been appointed to oversee and provide recommendations for setting up duty free facilities in Mattala.

This committee is to give their recommendations within a month to minister Jayaratne. A single firm is likely to be given the concession.

The airport has attracted criticism but infrastructure analysts have said it has potential as a freight hub.

Passengers from Sri Lanka's East and South can also potentially save time and money by flying out of Mattala, if there were sufficient connections.

Hiring charges of a taxi or passenger van from the East to Sri Lanka's capital Colombo can cost up to 150 US dollars.
