It is better if people who own a hybrid tell us these things.
Posts with "I think" will do no good.

I do not own one, but am/was interested in one.
Hybrids are meant to 'save the environment', not to reduce our fuel cost. But absolutely not a single person here will buy it for that!
Maybe the Govt reduced tax for that purpose.

My views on the hybrids
* As a result of the tax concession, the investment (cost) is on par with normal vehicles
* The rated fuel economy is around 22 km/l
* This is achieved with the aerodynamic designs, controlled driving styles and also the battery assist.
* The prius will only run for around 1.6 km at below 30km/h in the electric mode
* If you are to drive them the normal 'fun' way, they would give lesser consumption figures
* I do not know about servicing or repairing in SL
* Must be careful when purchasing older ones since ODO cannot be trusted on vehicles brought to SL and this might cause issues with the battery
* This is not the one for driving enthusiasts

Below will help to understand some benefits behind Hybrid. Note the milage numbers are for foriegn (USA like) countries.
It might have to be adjusted to local conditions.

I cannot agree with everything on that graphic.
The fuel rating of the prius is 48/51 mpg (US) which turns out to be arnd 22-23 km/l
This will of course vary with the driving style. Further the systems are different in the Prius and Insight.
Higher mileage figures are also obtained by driving very carefully. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiling

look at the figures right at the bottom. but if one is to do this in reality there will be a huge block behind us.

overall, hybrids do return better mileages than a conventional car (I would say generally around 1.5x-2x)
It is important to consider the payback of the investment.
But of course, hats off to anyone who buys them giving priority to the environment. I would be glad if this happens from top to bottom

now compare the cost/benefit and take your decision, specially expected price increase in the petrol Vs the Increase in the Price of the Battery Hybrid

yes gaja.
normal cars 1000cc-1600cc tax increased from 119% to 128% (9% of the depreciated value is increased as tax)
fora hybrid 38% to 50% (12% of depreciated value)
Although this does not seem much, we have to understand that the value of hybrids is far more than the value of ordinary cars before the tax. Therefore hybrids will now become more expensive.

Further I heard from unconfirmed sources that the allowed maximum age of the car has been reduced to 2 years. If the depreciated value does not change, then overall this is going to make the car market more expensive although we're going to find newer vehicles being imported. Further, car sales will take this opportunity to jack up the prices immediately

These government policy makers ruined the vechicle market by changing tax policies time to time . This is similar to they ruined share market by changing SEC rules time to time.
I am afraid we are not in a market oriented country. this is government oriented country. In Sri Lanka, every market behaviour is not determined by market it self but government policies.

Jaguar has unveiled plans to build a £700,000 ($1.15m) petrol-electric hybrid supercar in the UK.

It will build 250 cars in partnership with Formula 1 team Williams F1.
The C-X75’s ultra-light chassis and two electric engines will help it accelerate from nought to 60mph in three seconds.
