Sri Lanka stocks close up 0.6-pct

June 27, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's stocks closed up 0.64 percent on Thursday, with the heavy index stocks showing gains, ending a week of losses, brokers said.

The benchmark Colombo All Share Index closed 38.68 points higher at 6,111.36 and the S&P SL 20 Index closed 12.85 points higher at 3,426.48 up 0.38 percent.

Turnover was 1.3 billion rupees up from 2.2 million a day earlier.

Foreigners brought 450 million rupees worth shares while selling 947 million rupees in a day that 131 stocks advanced and 47 stocks declined.

Ceylon Tobacco Company contributed most to the index closing at 989.50 rupees up 9.70 rupees, John Keells Holdings gained 2.00 rupees to close at 251.80 rupees with over 2.6 million shares traded. Dialog Axiata gained 20 cents to close at 8.60 rupees.

Negative contributors included The Bukit Darah losing 13.40 rupees to close at 695.60 rupees, Ceylon Cold stores lost 7.70 rupees to close at 162.00 rupees.

Hatton National Bank closed at 161.20 rupees up 1.80 rupees and Sampath Bank closed at 204.70 down 0.30 rupees.

Nestle Lanka lost 9.30 rupees to close at 1940.50 cents and Distilleries Company closed at 194.70 rupees up 4.70 rupees and Aitken Spence closed at 130.00 rupees down 0.20 rupees.

The Colombo bourse looked up yesterday with a turnover of Rs.1.3 billion, down from the previous day’s Rs.2.27 billion, with both indices up – the All Share by 38.68 points (0.64%) and S&P SL20 by 13.98 points (0.41%) with 139 gainers comfortably outpacing 57 losers while 50 counters closed flat.

The size of today’s net foreign outflow was a notable Rs. 496.61 million (although down from Rs. 636.81 million the previous day), with foreign purchases amounting to Rs. 450.99 million as against sales amounting to Rs. 947.60 million.

Trading yesterday was supported by several block trades contributing over a billion rupees to turnover with 2.6 million JKH crossed moments before the close of trading at a price of Rs.247 in a deal worth Rs.643.4 million.

"The ASPI reversed a four day downward trend to end higher at market close, amid strong gains in selected large cap banking and consumer stocks. Market turnover remained above Rs. 1bn, supported by crossings on JKH, COMB, and SAMP, which collectively accounted for over 65% of turnover. The market also saw block trades on CTC, TILE, and LION," John Keells Stockbrokers said.

Other crossings were in Lion Brewery, CTC, Lanka Tiles, Commercial Bank (voting) and Sampath.

Brokers said that the JKH quantity was crossed in two parcels while the rest went in singles.

"The market gains were more substantial during early trading but eased off towards the close," a broker said.

Lion was the biggest turnover generator on the trading floor closing Rs.15 up at Rs.415 on 81,302 shares done between Rs.395 and Rs.415 contributing Rs.33.7 million to turnover while Sampath followed closing 50 cents down at Rs.204.50 on over 0.1 million shares done between Rs.203 and Rs.206.50 contributing Rs.30.3 million to turnover.

Among other banking stock showing volume, NDB closed a rupee up at Rs.163 on 0.1 million shares, Commercial Bank (voting) closed Rs.1.50 up at Rs.114.90 on 88,128 shares and Sanasa closed 20 cents up at Rs.71.20 on over 0.1 million shares.

Distilleries gained Rs.5 to close at Rs.195 on 87,112 shares, Hayleys was down Rs.7.30 to close at Rs.206.20 on 50,022 shares and Lanka Tiles up Rs.6.80 to close ate Rs.79.90 on over 0.1 million shares.
