This is nothing, compared to an employee of RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) deleted all of their customer's bank accounts while trying to install a new software to their mainframe. This happen recently and non of the customers were able to access their money for days....

June 28, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's stock market opening was delayed over an information technology issue, an official said.

After initially informing brokers that the market will open at 10.00 am the broker were told that there was an indefinite delay.

"Please note that the market has been halted until further notice," brokers were told in a message.

A CSE official said an information technology issue was being resolved, without elaborating.

We have found that a mismatch has arisen in certain client balances displayed on the Automated Trading System (ATS) during the pre-open session (9.00 am - 9.30 am) on 28th June 2013. Trading has been temporarily halted. The CSE is in the process of rectifying the problem.

Why can't they disable the mismatching accounts and let the market start operations? Should the entire market suffer due to this? Is it the actual reason? I doubt.

If something has gone wrong during the pre-open session, why can't they roll-back to the status prior to the pre-open? Technology is much advanced, these reasoning doesn't make any sense.

CSE IT team should be more responsible than this. May be they are testing their new system in the production environment. :DWe handle larger transaction than CSE. But never faced such issue.

They should not disable only mismatching accounts, instead they should verify 100% of transactions. It will take time. they are lucky tomorow is weekend, so have enough time.

probable scenario is one side of transaction has not completed. half way of the processing, database server stopped without rolling back, or in a group of programs which should run together, some have run and others not.

These things doesn't occur if proper recovery options have been adopted. Technology is much ahead of us.
You could have mirrored servers, mirrored hard disks, advanced RDBM systems, and what not.
With all these, if you have robust software you can always have systems running with Zero downtime.
Thousands of systems are run all over the world with on-line trading having minimum downtime.
