Sri J'pura University is doing some research on walla Patta (Gyrinopus walla) with a grant of 11 million Rupees.

We have already identified how fungus stimulate the tree and I hope we can develop a method in few years time to do the trick without the fungi.

Our G. walla resin is said to be tally with Aquilaria , need further research .
Gyrinopus var. is cultivated and used in Papua New Guinea also to produce agarwood.

I got in touch with Sadhaharitha and the estates I own are in in an Agarwood friendly environment. I'm willing to plant Agarwood in small scale (one acre) as a start but lack of knowledge about this plantation is holding me up.

Thanks to online forum, I gained a good knowledge about Agarwood but would like to be more thorough about this plantation. As in, A to Z clear information about,

- How to plant
- The maintenance proceedings
- How to do artificial inoculation
- Harvesting Proceedings

And all other information within that process. Also would like to know about,
- The foreign company which grows walla in puttam area
- The price range
- Legality of planting Agarwood in our own lands and possibility of exporting

[Before giving some details , I must say,

I cannot interfere with or criticize others' business models. I am importing and doing the propagation of the plants after obtaining the necessary approvals . Also, I cannot disclose my prices or use this forum to market my products. ]

In general , we can say , do not trust or keep hopes of the people who promise to buy mature trees and pay you agreed amounts in a future date.
There are may examples of failures.
At the moment there is only one party remaining in this business. (as far as I know) . They have followed almost similar system like Touchwood and have many thousands of clients waiting to receive cash for their matured trees in another 4-5 years of time. Still they are in pre-turbulent stage and 'seems to be' doing well.

- How to plant

I have not touched local wallapatta( Gyrinopus)due to many reasons including the unknown quality of the product and to avoid unnecessary troubles.
We grow imported fast growing (Acquilaria spp.) . As this is not native, police can not interfere.

- The maintenance proceedings

No much trouble . routine weeding and adding some fertilizer is beneficial. If drought you 'must' provide enough water.

- How to do artificial inoculation

many ways. Fungi live outside of the bark and if you cut open some places they will go inside and do the job. If you hire a laboratory they may grow the fungi for you.( like EM solution done by Seeds of Sarvodaya )
There are inoculate kits containing the fungi. You may import them but cost is high. I believe we can develop our own low cost method for this in few year time. Chinese do nail inserting method for past 800 years.

Note: I saw a business party claiming they have the Patent for this and they are the only people who can do Agarwood inoculation in SriLanka. We are not fools.

- Harvesting Proceedings

You have to cut the trees. You can sell wooden parts containing the resin. To make Oud oil the procedure is somewhat time and labour consuming.

- The price range

I think current price for 6 month old seedling is 1,450/- (as per Sadaharitha ad.)
This is OK if you buy 20-30 plants.
For 1 acre you need 350-500 plants depending on your selected cultivation and harvesting method. Hence I insist you must go for a negotiated price. It should be at least 750/- ( 50% discount) If you are familiar with importing planting material , seeds and seedlings are available in country side Malaysia and Thailand. Remember Agar seeds die within 6-7 days of harvesting.

- Legality of planting Agarwood in our own lands and possibility of exporting

No one can prohibit planting. But, when transporting, you have to have a proof that you did not cut it from a Govt. land. Otherwise Police will put you with Kuddas and your name as walla patta hora in lankadeepa.

Even the trees from our own garden need CITES certification to ship them out of the country. International trade need CITES for these protected trees. It is issued by Forest dept. Hence, you have to maintain a history records with them to get such certification for your trees.
For us, we found buyers available in UAE and Singapore.

Thanks for the information but I have one more question to ask.

How do I get these fast growing (Acquilaria spp.)? Does the company I mentioned earlier provide these type of seeds except local walla (Gyrinopus)? Since this is a one time investment, its important to make sure we plant the right type of plant.

Also would like to know the difference of these two types (Acquilaria and Gyrinopus) of plants.

@ kavi,

Acquilaria is the dominated and mostly known tree for producing agarwood. It has established market for its resin. We do not have it in our country.
Our Walapatta is Gyrinopus.
Gyrinopus is also producing a similar resin. It is still to be grown as a commercial crop. In PNG I think they have started plantations. As such better we go for the established variety.

The Company you mentioned is not offering seeds. They import seeds and sell 6 months old seedlings .

I am not sure about the best Acqularia variety for Sri Lanka.
Chinese say their spp. is best and Thais say Subintergra is best due to its fragrance and growth rate. They have A.crassna and A.subintegra and they grow both.

I have seen subintegra and it is growing well here in SL. Sadaharitha is selling Crassna. With my limited experience I cannot say which is best for Sri Lanka. Both however at top of the 15 types of Aquilaria. If you can, try to grow both . I put more interest on subintegra because my Thai connections who grow both advised me to do so.

I have found few web sites re. this and they put subintegra at top and crassna at 2nd.

Thanks alot for all these information. I didn't expect lengthy and very useful information from you. I know only 35% of world's demand for Agarwood is met but I wonder whether the demand will be the same in 8 to 10 years of time since many people know the value of it and started growing Agarwood.

I wish this was a plantation I could gain a continuous income like Rubber after waiting 5 to 6 years till it grows or may be tea in 3 years of time. Nevertheless, with all this valuable information, I have decided to plant Agarwood. I hope government or any laboratory will provide this inoculate Kit for a lower price in near future.

I'm looking forward to hear from you about recent developments in this regard.

Just a point...

The above article says,

“For Sandalwood tree it takes three to four years for maturity and for Teak tree it is seven years to mature. Both of them are guaranteed of high return on investments,” he added.

This is completely misleading and wrong.

Those trees take much longer time to mature and produce marketable wood or oils.

By the way, if anyone interested investing in these trees it is better , cheaper and safer to grow them himself. Do not trust 100% these fancy stories told by businessmen about a lucrative future.
