Mr Alwis Famous and entertaining work :
THE National Parks Of Ceylon A Guide by Lyn De Alwis
Pub Dept of Wild Life, 1969
( Covers National Parks of Ruhuna, Wilpattu, and Gal-Oya)

'Footfalls in the Wild" collection of the writings of the late Deshabandu Lyn de Alwis published in 2011
http://www.sundaytimes.lk/110724/Plus/plus_15.html

Lyn De Alwis

Every blade in the field
Every leaf in the forest
Lays down its life in its season
As beautifully as it was taken up

I find this a very apposite epitaph for my brother Lyn, who from his young days was always engrossed and absorbed in his natural environment and went on to dedicate his life to its management and conservation. As a fitting but rather belated tribute to such dedication, he was awarded the title of Deshabandu by President Chandrika Kumaratunga shortly before his death.

Lyn received an honours degree in zoology, at the University of Colombo and, found a perfect fit in his first posting in 1955 at the National Zoological Gardens, Dehiwela. He served with great distinction as the director of this much loved institution from 1962 to 1985. He also formed the Young Zoologists Association to increase the participation of youth in educational and conservation activities.

Lyns excellent work at the national zoo also brought him to the attention of Lee Kwan Yew who requested him to help with the design, planning and, establishment of the Singapore Zoological Gardens in 1970. The then Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike released him for two years so that he could oversee the construction of the zoo while domiciled in Singapore.

Several years later, Lyn was invited to design and, oversee construction of the jewel in the crown of the Singapore Zoo, the worlds first night safari. Lyn was also invited to design and plan a zoo in Dubai but even though he conducted a feasibility study, ill health prevented him from proceeding with the plans.
Lyn was also a greatly respected authority in the field of wildlife conservation, and particularly in the conservation of the Asian elephant. He not only established the first elephant breeding programme at Pinnawela, but also, as Wildlife Conservation Department director (from 1965 to 1970 and 1977 to 1983), he established several sanctuaries and national parks (including the Uda Walawe National Park), evolved the technique of elephant drives (where elephants threatening human habitations were driven into national parks), and set up a network of jungle corridors to ensure continuity of habitats and migration routes for elephants and other fauna.

He was the chairman, IUCN Asian Elephant Specialist Group for 10 years and was also made a member of honour of the World Wildlife Fund for his success in saving doomed herds of elephants from areas ear-marked for development. In this regard, I recall with admiration how he fought valiantly to save the Wasgamuwa National Park which was being encroached upon by the Mahaweli Authority. Lyns commitment to wildlife conservation was such that he was willing to withstand the ire of politicians and sacrifice the eminent positions to which he was elevated.
Lyn kept meticulous field notes and had a prodigious memory; he was not only an absolute wizard when it came to identifying bird calls and plants, but could also recall the names and life histories of the huge staff he supervised in each national park as well as the Colombo office.

He was an excellent wildlife photographer and had a passion for orchids which he nurtured with the same love and attention he showered on his two children, who have both followed in his footsteps in their own way: Chitran is a much sought after landscaper and Nirma is a skilled wildlife artist with elephants being her forte.

In Lavo, of course, he could not have found a better mate and partner. She was not only his chief confidante, caregiver and chauffer but also a superb cook and an extremely talented craftswoman. She accompanied Lyn on many of his travels and survived encounters with tarantulas in her tent and black mambas in her bedroom, with fortitude and humour.

Lyn was an accomplished musician and could play classical music as well as oldies with equal aplomb. He was for many years the organist at our family parish, St. Francis of Assisi, Mt. Lavinia and did Indrani and me the great honour of playing at our wedding service. Every Christmas, he and Lavo would host a dinner which would end with him at the piano and the rest of the family around him lustily belting out carols till the wee hours. Sadly, that tradition has now been broken as Lyn has gone to his well earned rest in the nearer presence of the good Lord. The candles in our family are being snuffed out one by one Ave atque valehail, brother, farewell.

as i see the main cause for this in sri lanka there are only 3 jobs recognized as jobs. 1 engineer 2 doctors 3 lawyers
all other doing there jobs seems they are doing it coz they couldn't achieve above 3.if you ask 100 kids in sri lanka 99 of them would say they want to be 1 of above 3.all other jobs have no respect no attention at all.
if u think how this connect to above story I went zoo last week.in fish area i saw a board that they are selling pet fishes there. but when i go there i couldn't find any1 i went 3 or 4 times within a time around 4 hrs.and finally at 5.3 i couldn't hold my self and went in and in to prohibited area also and i found the workers playing karam and when i ask them they told me to check fish myself.they even didn't get up from their chairs.
i think these situations happening merely bcoz of these people working their coz they want to but only they have to.just coz their is no other job.they are not animal lovers or some1 but throwing food to the animals coz they get salary for that....hmm..nywy i saw now there is a new project they have launched people who love animals and wild life they train them and give them a certificate even.i saw there were few people who i assumed get trained like that also..so i hope at least future would be better...

this can be seen in every sector of the sri lanka..
our people don't know  how to market a product, if you went place like singapore you will see the difference. just take the food outlets, most of SL eating places staffs dont have uniforms/not good looking (most of the time served by guys)
in singapore/thailand etc these things done by pretty girls .  in singapore zoo most of the animal care takers ,animal show performs nice pretty girls and boys.
but ours" sorong adagaththa alikarayo " hehe thats the difference.

there is a one bakery in colombo manage by singapore "bread talk" bakery chain ..see the different when you go there.
yaka i totally agree with you.

Lyn de Alwis was appointed as Director Wildlife in the late 70's and started doing some outstanding work to overhaul the dept while serving as the director of the Zoo. He was abruptly pulled out by JR and since then it has been given to a series of incompetent people. The Wild life dept is very popular with the politico's as it has vast extents of land within its controll(and also to abuse the parks and bungalows) Lyn was also the foremost authority on wild elephants in the world. While he was advising African governments they were dragging wild elephants with bull dozers in Sri Lanka.(I have photo's). We even now have such talented and committed people, but they are working overseas or lying low, we all know the reasons why.

BTW Chinwi , if you were in YZA late 70's or early 80's you would probably have known by brother, a bit larger than life character into snakes, birds and fish. Hard guy to miss, he died in 93' in an accident.

Late 70s.
Im sorry, now no names and faces in my memory.
I can remember Piyal Parakrama, Kuragala , few guys fascinated about snakes ... like that.
My interest was manly with snakes (and later with birds also.) That was a nice time with nice people.

Sorry to here the tragedy.
