Hi Folks,

I have been hearing a lot these days about investing in the sri lankan stock market. I have saved up some money and I plan to invest it. I am new to this so I really don't know where to start. Can any of you'll direct me to the right direction? Any good tutorials/videos that I could read or watch? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Azy

@azy123,
I suggest you give some more info about yourself. Such as your past experience in investing (if any), what you know already about the markets and investment. May be why you registered in 2011 Wink

Then it will be helpful for others to come up with suggestion more suitable for you.

In addition, pls try to answer the following:

1. Have you opened an account with a broker?
2. Have you bought any shares in the past?
3. Have you heard you can profit from the market bu someone?
4. Why do you want to invest? ; just get a feel/to get a steady income/ as a long term investment etc.

fds are better that's true, but as a student im trying to learn this market...yes I have opened an account with 10,000 rupees. you can see with this amount of buying power brokers may not give their priority...

I have a little finance knowledge...but I know theories not work all the time..

I had osea shares (200) and I could get a profit 1200 by selling it at 19.20...I brought mbsl and make a loss...

Well, I did not get much luxury of advises as a beginner. But later on learnt a lot from other as well as from my actions.
If somebody is keen on long term survival in the market, I recommend getting some idea about the following. Learning them will not make you a master at all but knowing them help to become one some day. In my view experience matters a lot above all.
Here we go...
1. share valuation
2. What is fundamental analysis
3. What is technical analysis
4. Market cycles and patterns
5. Money management in investing/trading
6. Risk controlling in Inv./Trd
7. Trading Psychology
8. Crowd behavior

There are tons of material in the Internet to read and watch. Let me know if someone need any of my personal recommendations.

There will be losses and gains on the way; Consistency will be the key for long term survival. To achieve Consistency, you need to have the right level of Control and Confidence.

It's like driving a car (One of my friends told me)
Confidence is like the accelerator;
Control is like the brake pedal.

You need to have the both used at proper levels at proper times.

(Problem is we do not have driving schools to teach trading yet; Do we?)

Hi folks
Sorry if my first post wasn't clear enough. I will try and provide much details as possible.

Currently I am in Sri Lanka for my summer vacation. I study in London and come down twice a year. I do have a trading account with capital trust and in 2011, before I went to London I did try a bit of trading. Taking one of my friends advice I bought a couple of shares of AHPL. Made a loss of 60k sold all my shares and went to London.

A few days back I deposited 20k into my account just to learn the trend of the market. I really dont mind if I loose this money as long as I learn something. Would be like an investment. I need to learn how to walk before I could run.

Some of my friends told me this is the right time to invest and I hear a lot about PCH A lot of people suggest that I should buy PCH now. Im not sure how right they are.

The reason I want to learn trading now is because I've got a lot of free time. I need to learn as much as I can before I go to London and invest large there. I want to get into Day Trading rather than long term trading so that I have a passive income coming in every month. Atleast to cover up my expenses in London. All I need is good material to read/watch and any tutes that would give me an idea of how the market works.

Any little help is appriciated.

Cheers!

You wanna trade, buy something like Reef W (Example, not a buy recommendation). Much better chance to get something than PCH!

Cheers!
