New Zealand's Fonterra finds bacteria in products
08-04-2013 07:58 BJT

cctv

New Zealand’s Fonterra, the world’s largest dairy exporter, has found an ingredient in some of its dairy products that contains a strain of bacteria that can cause botulism, with patients showing symptoms of nausea, vomiting and muscle weakness. In the worst cases, it can lead to coma and death if left untreated.
Gary Romano, Fonterra’S Head of NZ Milk Products, said, "We are very, very concerned about human health and we are doing everything possible to minimise exposure. I want to talk about people rather than brands."
New Zealand authorities have triggered a global recall of up to 1,000 tons of dairy products across seven countries. Products include infant formula, sports drinks, protein drinks and other beverages.
Countries affected besides New Zealand are China, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. China imports the majority of its milk powder products from New Zealand. Chinese authorities have asked domestic importers to recall any products which may have been contaminated by the bacteria and to ramp up scrutiny of New Zealand dairy products coming into the country.

Nothing to worry VISA. tell Fonterra chief to export these contaminated milk powder to SL. we are in a position to issue a 'sample test - ok ' report to them with something behind the scene. This has earlier happened in SL. so why worry chief. talk about the product rather than the humans in sri Lankan style.

From Island newspaper......

"While the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), Sri Lanka’s pioneer Scientific Research and Development organization, stood its ground and reasserted that the noxious chemical was discovered in four varieties of imported milk, the Health Ministry dismissed the claim as "unfounded""

Russia  ban Fonterra milk powder  and China ban all from New Zealand.
!

Botulism related bacteria found in milk products from NZ.
.
Botulism =  rare but sometimes fatal paralytic illness.

Be careful members, specially if you, you family or friends have  kids and feed them with milk products.  !

Botulism facts

* The botulism neurotoxin is one of the most potent, lethal substances known.
* Botulism is a disease caused by this neurotoxin (or specifically A, B, E, or F type neurotoxin).
* The neurotoxin paralyzes muscles and can be deadly.
* Food-borne botulism is usually caused by eating contaminated home-canned foods.

China has actually banned all milk powder imports from New Zealand. I saw a local article mentioning that 4 imported milk powder brands got issues. The only milk powder made in SL is Highland which is sometimes not in stock and difficult to make tea with. Need to go back to fresh milk like our parent days. Milk powder is a concept forced on to third world countries. Although this is a cheaper and convenient option than fresh milk I have not seen it in India.

On the other hand, Coconut / Coconut Oil which was the considered as the most unhealthy food product / oil in the West many years ago is now considered as a Superfood. An Antioxidant marvel, they say. much better than olive oil etc.

Moral of the story - Drink Plain Tea with Ginger (another superspice) and eat Pol Sambol every morning !

The only milk powder made in SL is Highland .....

add Pelawatta also. - Ariyaseela Wickramanayake's product.
Not available everywhere due to limited distribution . Good taste.

I saw a sales point at Stanly Thilekeratne Mw., Nugegoda closer to Jubilee Post junction.

BTW, yesterday we got Highland available at Cargills after a long time.

Both products does not contain additives for easy mix with water.
First you have to mix the powder with very little lukewarm / cold water and make a paste before adding more water or boiled tea.

yes.
Normally people value milk for its protein content, as a source.

Protein we can get from 1 glass of milk is about 6 grams.
It costs you 22 Rupees at today's price. (26 gm of milk powder)

The same amount of protein is available in 1 and 1/3 cups of boiled red rice. ( 'sinhala hale bath' as called in our villages) . The cost is about 3.50. ( 75 gm of raw rice - haal)

So, a farther who spent 22 rupees to milk feed his kid can give him 6 times more protein if he go for rice.

Other main commercial highlight is milk Calcium. That is also not worth at today's rates as we can get cheaper food.

My argument is this :
Milk, solid or liquid is very good until you can have it at lower costs (or zero cost) than rice.
In India and country-side in Sri lanka we had one or two animals per each household and they supplied almost free milk.

People had to work hard to produce rice . Hence milk was cheaper and valued high.

Now we are trying to consume it paying very higher price than cheaper rice.

Milk : Protein 25% , Carbohydrate 38% , fat 26 %

Rice (red)  : Protein 8 % , Carbohydrate 75 % , Fat 3 %

If we analyzes daily requirement ratios, Rice is the best and much cheaper  with Pol sambola or Kiri hodi.

'Much cheaper' means we can feed fully daily requirement with money we have. If we try to buy milk, you will end up with malnutrition.
