Colombo bourse today closed in negative territory led by price declines in index heavy blue-chips. All share price index dropped by 107.67 points (-1.73%) to end at 6,116.67 and S&P SL 20 index decreased by 59.81 points (-1.71%) to end at 3,434.37. Price depreciations in large cap stocks such as Nestle (LKR 2,340, -8.05%), Ceylon Tobacco (LKR 1,290, -5.11%) and John Keells Holdings (LKR 249.90, -3.63%) contributed negatively to the index performances. Only Ceylon Hospitals managed to close at its 52 week high prices (LKR 110.00) while 51 stocks closed with 52 week low prices.

Daily market turnover was LKR 954mn. Several crossings were recorded in Sampath Bank (2.5mn shares at LKR 190.00), John Keells Holdings (0.2mn shares at LKR 250.00), Textured Jersey (3.7mn shares at LKR 13.60) and Access Engineering (1mn shares at LKR 21.70). The value of the crossings accounted for 62% of the total market turnover.

Sampath Bank with LKR 506mn, John Keells Holdings with LKR 95mn and Union Bank with LKR 54mn emerged as top contributors to the market turnover. Shares of Union Bank were heavily traded today due to rumors and media reports on possible acquisition by the cash-rich National Development Bank. Nation Lanka Finance and John Keells Holdings were also among the heavily traded stocks.

Orient Finance announced its first and final dividend of LKR 0.20 per share and E- channeling announced the final dividend of LKR 0.50 per share today. Softlogic Holdings announced a debenture issue of LKR 1bn which is to be open for subscription on 4th September.

Foreign investors were net buyers with a net inflow of LKR 337mn. Foreign participation was 49% of the market activity. Foreign net inflows were seen in counters such as Sampath Bank (LKR 382mn), Distilleries (LKR 36mn) and Commercial Bank (LKR 19mn) while foreign net outflows were seen in John Keells Holdings (LKR 75mn).

Cash Map closed at 34%.

Aug 21, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's stocks plunged 1.7 percent Wednesday as three large capitalized stocks that had taken the market up in recent weeks, lost ground, brokers said.

The benchmark Colombo All Share Index closed 107.6 points lower at 6,116.67 down 1.73 percent and the S&L20 Index slid 1.7 percent to close at 2,434.3 points down 58.8 points.

Turnover was 955 million rupees.

On Thursday 51 stocks advanced but 145 stocks lost ground wiping out 44 billion rupees in stock values.

Foreign investors bought stocks worth 632 million rupees and sold 295 million rupees of shares.

Recent high flyers Ceylon Tobacco Company closed at 1,290.0 rupees down 69.40, John Keells Holdings closed at 249.40 down 9.90 rupees and Nestle Lanka closed at 2,340.10 down 204.70.

The weakness in key large cap stocks triggered a sell-off in other stocks, brokers said.

Corporate earnings have been week in the June quarter, though there is signs that economic activities may be bottoming out.

Banks have also suffered losses on gold loan and have started to make provisions.

Commercial Bank closed at 118.50 rupees down 1.10, HNB closed at 154.50, down 50 cents, DFCC Bank closed at 128.00 down 1.10.

Dialog Axiata closed at 8.50 flat and Sri Lanka Telecom closed at 40 rupees up 10 cents.

Distilleries Corporation closed at 192.00 rupees down 2.90, Aitken Spence closed at 121.00 rupees down 1.0 rupees.

Royal Ceramics closed at 89.00 rupees down 1.00 rupees, Lanka Tiles closed at 72.60 down 40 cents. Tokyo Cement closed at 25.30 rupees down 60 cents.
