Market witnessed a lackluster trading session during the day and closed with negative returns. ASI lost 51.32 index points (-0.88%) to end at 5,782.72 and S&P SL 20 Index lost 32.24 points (-0.99%) to close at 3,229.09.

Price depreciation in index heavy stocks such as Nestle by 6.3%, Ceylon Tobacco by 1.7%, and Chevron Lubricants (LLUB) by 3.3% contributed negatively to the index performances. Increase in crude oil prices by 2.6% during the last week was the key reason to the drop in share price of Chevron Lubricants.

Daily market turnover was at seven week low of LKR 277mn. John Keells Holdings topped the turnover list with LKR 123mn supported by the 0.2mn negotiated deal which changed hands at a price of LKR 212.00 per share. Further, Chevron Lubricants with LKR 18mn and Commercial Bank with LKR 15mn were the next best contributors to the market turnover.

Touchwood Investment was the mostly traded stock during the day. Bid side of the stock’s order book was represented with zero buyers during most of the trading time. According to the media a provincial High Court – Sri Lanka is to hear a petition to wind up Touchwood Investments. The notice placed by F J & G De Saram, a legal firm has stated that "any creditor contributory" to the firm who may want to support or oppose the action could get a copy of the court petition and be present at the hearing. However by the time of writing this review the company has not made any announcement to the CSE with this regard. Stock closed LKR 1.80, down by LKR 0.50 (-22%).

Further, Asia Siyaka, PC House and PCH Holdings were among the mostly traded stocks for the day.

Foreign participation for the day was 49% whilst foreign investors were net buyers with LKR 11mn.

Cash map closed at 36%.

COLOMBO, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan stocks slipped on Monday, ending two straight sessions of gains, as investors sold shares of large caps like Nestle Lanka PLC and turnover slumped to near seven-week low as concerns about the rupee kept investors on the sidelines.

The main share index ended down 0.88 percent, or 51.32 points, at 5,782.72.

Nestle Lanka shares fell 6.21 percent to 2002.10 rupees, while those of Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC dropped 1.63 percent to close at 1,150.90 rupees.

The Sri Lankan rupee was steady on Monday as exporter dollar sales were offset by late importer demand, but dealers said the currency was still under downward pressure.

It hit an all-time low on Wednesday due to panic buying by importers, but recovered later in the week.

Monday's turnover was 277.1 million rupees, the lowest since July 17 and well below this year's daily average of about 902.7 million rupees.

Foreign investors were net buyers of 10.6 million rupees worth of shares, extending net inflows so far this year to 18.55 billion rupees.
