Market closed with positive return on both indices. ASI increased marginally by 2.54 points to end at 5,786.16 and S&P SL 20 Index increased by 13.61 points (+0.42%) to close at 3,219.09. price appreciations in Carsons Cumberbatch by 5.1% to close at LKR 390.00, Commercial Bank by 1.7% to close at LKR 118.00 and Bukit Dharah by 1.6% to close at LKR 663.00 contributed positively to the index performances.

Market turnover was LKR 920mn. Sampath Bank recorded the top turnover of LKR 219mn closely followed by Touchwood Investments (LKR 204mn) and Commercial Bank (LKR 118mn). Negotiated deals were recorded in Sampath Bank (0.55mn shares at LKR 170-171.00 per share), HNB (0.5mn shares at LKR 150.00 per share), Commercial Bank (0.5mn shares at LKR 116.00 per share) and Lanka IOC (1.0mn shares at LKR 25.00 per share). The aggregate value of the total crossings accounted for 27% of the total turnover.

Touchwood Investment was the heavily traded stock and emerged as the top gainer for the day. Subsequent to the AGM held today the rumors spread regarding the cash infusion through a foreign borrowing to the company. The stock soars to the high of LKR LKR 5.20 and closed at LKR 5.00, up by LKR 1.70 (+52%). Further, Central Investment & Finance and Asia Assets Finance traded heavily and ended among the top gainers. Central Investment & Finance closed at LKR 1.50, up by 25% and Asia Assets Finance closed at LKR 2.30, up by 21%.

Foreign participation was 16% whilst net inflow was LKR 233mn. Net foreign buying were seen in Commercial Bank (LKR 113mn), Sampath Bank (LKR 78mn), John Keells Holdings (LKR 29mn).

Cash map closed at 49%.

The sentiment driven Touchwood Investments PLC (TWOD) gained by more than 50 per cent, witnessing enormous retailer participation on Thursday, seeing an aggregated quantity of nearly 50 million shares changing hands within the day’s trading, analysts said.

This came amidst the annual general meeting of the company which was held today, headed by the company’s newly appointed directors which included the controversial Parliamentarian deleted Silva, who is a suspect in a murder case. In an announcement to the Colombo Stock Exchange on Wednesday, the company said Solomon Kankanamge Dhammika, Vice Chairman of the South Asian (7-a-side) Football Association and Director of Benchmark Education Institute, Matara has been appointed Executive Director, only a day after Lanka Wijendra Kiwlegedera, Managing Director of Asian Investments & Mercantile Services (Pvt) Ltd, was appointed an executive director of the company.

Wednesday’s announcement said Mr. Kiwlegedera has been appointed acting CEO with effect from Tuesday. His earlier appointment as Executive Director was made effective from Monday, September 23.
The counter rose to an intraday peak of Rs 5.20 spearheading the price gainers for the day and closed s slightly lower at Rs 5 with a considerable gain of 51.52 per cent (up by Rs 1.70). The substantial quantity of shares being dealt accounted to nearly 60% of the total number of shares traded during the day.

The benchmark All Share Index gained a tiny 2.54 points to settle at 5,786.16 and the S&P managed to breathe within the green terrain, gaining 13.61 points or 0.42 per cent to close at 3,219.09. As at the day’s close, the total market capitalization stood at Rs 2.38 trillion recording a year to date gain of 9.94 per cent .
