The Colombo equity market closed today on a positive note, as the benchmark ASI appreciated by 29.15 points (+0.50%) to close at 5,867.10. S&P SL 20 Index gained 12.59 points (+0.39%) to close at 3,244.38.

The advancement was a result of the gains recorded in the share prices of Ceylon Tobacco by 3.4% to close at LKR 1,090.00, John Keells Holdings by 1.2% to close at LKR 219.00 and Lion Brewery by 4.0% to close at LKR 374.90.

Market turnover was LKR 484mn. John Keells Holdings recorded the top turnover of LKR 235mn with 293,809 shares changed hands in two crossings at a price of LKR 219.00 per share. Further Touchwood Investment with LKR 24mn and Colombo Land & Development with LKR 21mn were recorded the next highest turnover levels.

Even though Touchwood Investment traded heavily during the day, re-appointment of MP D_minda Silva and his father Lal Silva as advisors to the Touchwood Director Board failed to renew the investor interest in Torchwood Investment as the share price dropped by 4.7% to close at LKR 4.10 due to heavy selling pressure.

Further, HVA Foods, Colombo Land & Development and Dankotuwa Porcelain were among the heavily traded stocks during the day.

Foreign participation for the day was 27% whilst recording a net inflow of LKR 228mn. Net foreign inflows were seen in John Keells Holdings (LKR 232mn), Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings (LKR 3mn) and Commercial Bank (LKR 2mn).

Cash map closed at 30%.
