Oct 08, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka stocks closed up 0.51 percent on continued investor interest in tobacco stocks and speculative trading and the rupee fell slightly on importer demand, brokers and dealers said.

The Colombo benchmark All Share Price Index closed 29.95 points higher at 5,897.05, up 0.51 percent, provisional data showed, after reaching an intraday high of 5,908.09.

The S&P SL20 closed 12.96 points higher at 3,257.34, up 0.40 percent.

Turnover reached 490.34 million rupees, up from 483.77 million rupees the previous day, with shares of 97 firms gaining against 82 losers.

Foreigners bought shares worth 232.04 million rupees, down from 243.14 million the previous day, and sold shares worth 183.98 million rupees, up from 15.37 million the previous day.

Ceylon Tobacco closed 39.70 rupees higher at 1,115.20 and featured in a single crossing.

Nestle Lanka closed 33.50 rupees higher at 1,995.00 rupees.

Sri Lanka Telecom closed 70 cents higher at 39.30 rupees and Trans Asia Hotels closed 4.50 rupees higher at 89.00 rupees.

CT Holdings closed 2.90 rupees higher at 144.00 rupees.

Finlays Colombo closed 25.50 rupees lower at 259.00 rupees.

National Development Bank closed 3.60 rupees lower at 145.40 rupees.

Ceylon Guardian Investment closed 6.00 rupees lower at 190.00 rupees and Overseas Realty closed 40 cents lower at 17.50 rupees.

Lanka Milk Foods closed 7.20 rupees lower at 109.20 rupees.

JKH closed flat at 219.00 rupees and featured in two crossings.

Speculative trading continued in troubled Touchwood Investments, closing 60 cents higher at 4.70 rupees, with more than 7.64 million shares changing hands during the day.

CIFL closed 10 cents lower at 1.10 rupees with more than 1.27 million shares changing hands.

HVA Foods closed 20 cents higher at 11.70 rupees with more than 2.32 million shares changing hands.

Blue Diamonds closed 10 cents higher at 3.30 rupees with more than 2.27 million shares changing hands.

Nation Lanka closed 50 cents higher at 8.00 rupees with more than 1.54 million shares traded.

The rupee fell slightly to 131.20/23 against the US dollar in late trading the spot market on importer demand, dealers said. The US dollar was quoted at 131.15/20 rupees at the opening.

COLOMBO, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan stocks hit six-week closing highs on Tuesday, led by large caps such as Ceylon Tobacco Co Plc and Nestle Lanka Plc in thin volume, brokers said.

The main share index ended 0.51 percent, or 29.95 points firmer at 5,897.05, its highest since Aug. 27.

Investors were looking at fundamentally strong stocks and were betting on shares such as Ceylon Tobacco and Nestle Lanka, dealers said.

Shares in market heavyweight Ceylon Tobacco rose 3.69 percent to 1,115.20 rupees, while Nestle Lanka gained 1.71 percent to 1,995.00 rupees.

Foreign investors were net buyers of 48.1 million rupees ($366,800) worth of shares on Tuesday, extending the net buying so far this year to 20.74 billion rupees.

The day's turnover was 490.3 million rupees, well below this year's daily average of about 873 million rupees.
