The Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) has recommended the setting of another board at the Colombo Stock Exchange to list and trade Board of Investment companies, it was announced on Friday. Dhammika Perera, Deputy Director-General at the SEC revealed this at the “Issuer’s Forum” organized by the SEC to promote stock exchange listings among non-listed companies. No other details were available. (DEC)

, thus giving foreign investors an exit route

Sri Lanka is planning to introduce a separate ‘Board’ for BOI firms to list in the Colombo Stock Exchange and give foreign investors an exit route from their investments, if and when they needed.

This was revealed by SEC Chief, Dr. Nalaka Godahewa, while speaking at a forum held in Colombo on Friday evening to promote new listings in the CSE.

The event was organized by the CSE.

He said BOI firms will be given the chance to list from the first day of their operations, subjected to several conditions.

“A BOI firm with a minimum investment of US$ 10 million will be permitted to list in the CSE”, added Godahewa.

“BOI mooted this idea to encourage FDI’s via an exit mechanism for foreign investors”, the SEC Chief said.

However, he said nothing has been finalized yet and discussions are still underway between SEC and the CSE officials on the matter.

“There won’t be a public float for BOI firms, only qualified investors will be given the option of investing”, added Dhammika Perera, Deputy Director General of the SEC.

It is very encouraging to see SEC and CSE are now thinking out of the box and also taking some bold decisions.  Three announcements yesterday are proof of this 1) reintroduction of listing by introductions having addressed previous concerns 2) raising the no of public shareholders requirement for diri savi board 3) plans to introduce a separate board to attract more BOI projects .  Only those who do things get criticized in this country . Yet these guys  keep doing new things. Its a good combination at CSE and SEC chairman level now. Both new and supportive of each other.  Hope they will not be blocked by some powerful people who are not happy with new comers getting attention.
