According to the latest information, VLL is going to construct a 6.5 MW MHPP in Kabale District in Uganda by 2014 and pending for the final approval to start the construction.

Vidulllanka to have nearly 24 MW of hydropower capacity by next 2-3 years in addition to the ongoing project in 1.1 MW of Windpower in Ambewela and 2 MW project in Biomass.

From another 2-3 year time you will have to observe the rain pattern in Uganda as well if you are going to invest in VLL.

For me, this is the best pick in Hydropower section when considering their expertise in the field with Vidul Engineering Limited, diversification over locations and other sources of energy, and future earnings through expanding the capacity.

Projects already completed.
Bambarabatuoya - 3.2 MW
Batatota - 2 MW
Sheen – 0.56 MW
Ganthuna - 1.2 MW
HalOya - 0.8 MW
Wembiyagoda - 1.3 MW
Madugeta - 2.5 MW (from 1st Nov 2013)

Projects in Progress
Lower Kothmale - 4 MW (from March 2014)
Pilot Project – Wind Power 1.1 MW (Ambewella)
2 MW Biomass project (Eastern Province)

New Projects to start
construction from 2014
1.75 MW MHPP in Badulla
6.5 MW MHPP in Kabale District, Uganda

This is one of the sectors we can invest as mid term investments.

As we have already completed 1 full wet year, all hydro power companies are looking impressive. We are in the 2nd month of the 3rd quarter, which is continue to be wet. So we can look forward to an very impressive FY 2013/14 from these power companies.

Even HPWR is investing big in Uganda. Probably these companies will sign the relevant agreements during the CHOGM business sessions in next week.

If you select the correct sectors/companies you do not need to worry about the index. In this sector VPEL, VLL, HPWR and PAP all are attractive.

Following articles in the research section may helpful.

Expect an update with the current quarter results.

There was another good article regarding rain patterns by one of the moderators, which I cannot find the link.

Hariesha,

is it meaningful comparing HPWR? as it is more into thermal power? my guess is that bulk of Hydro for them comes through the recent aquisition of stake in PAP.

Anyways, in the following, I have compared VLL, VPEL, PAP with HPFL. It gives some interesting comparison with regard to margins and returns considering the last quarter. I still have not compared the capacity and the plant factors. So far I have looked only at VLL in detail.

By the way, investing in Uganda is a very good initiative taken by Sri Lankan companies. Their electricity supply is way behind to fulfill the demand. Projections indicate that the demand to be doubled by next few years.

If I am not mistaken Sri Lanka’s VS Hydro (Pvt) Limited owned by Premasiri Sumanasekera, a graduate in Physical Science from the University of Colombo, has already built and connected one or two MHPPs into Uganda’s national grid. In Uganda there is no restriction that the capacity of new HPPs that are built by private parties to be less than 10 MW. One of HPP built and connected to Uganda by Sri Lanka’s VS Hydro (Pvt) Limited has the capacity of 18 MW.

Hope Sri Lankan engineers working there having a great time and have already visited to see the source of Nile river which closer to Kampala, the main city, and to places where you can crossed the equator.
