Last year banking sector gave some handsome dividend. Specially SAMP,HNB and NDB. This year though not good as last year for the sector hopefully they will declare a worthy dividend.

Dear Mihiranga

I ve learned something called perpetuity in share valuing. That is if you divided the dividend by bank rate you will get the ideal value of a share.

Suppose you get dividend of rs 1.24 from TJL and if the bank interest for saving is 10% then you look at the price you are ready to pay for TJL

1.24/(10/100)

You will get 12.40

Thus if you have purchased TJL below 12.40 last year you are up on deal. TJL was trading at Rs 7+ .

Just use this perpetuity formula and check what are the good dividen paying companies

Dividend Payout ratio is a nice number but it has less meaning for investors , I suggest so.

If you are trying to evaluate TJL today they you have to look at their possibility to pay a dividend and then do the same calculation.

So far they have earnings about .77 for six months..
If we believe it will be the exact figure for next six months altogether EPS will be 1.54

Maximum they can pay as dividend is 1.54.. If so the maximum you will be ready to pay for TJL share is 15.40. No one will pay 100 of its earnings as dividend.

Thus these are all based on future assumptions.

LIOC will be another nice buy. At current rates they will end up with Rs 10 as EPS. Thus the maximum they can declare as dividend is 10. If so the maximum price one can pay for LIOC is Rs 100.00.. But you have to look at their dividend paying history. so the expectation will be Rs 3.50. Then the maximum you can pay for LIOC is rs 35.

Any way my friend dividend is nothing absolute but a comparative variable.

Very nice explanation. By the way, this is only if you are looking for dividend. But if you are to buy good shares, you definitely will have to pay a premium.

Dear Leon

Your valued argument is accepted. This is only for dividend seekers who prefer to avoid risk and compare investments with bank rates. But the real gainers are capital gain seekers than dividend seekers. Suppose you have JINS and purchased at Rs 10 than every year you may get one ruppee dividend you are happy. When JINS maintain the same one rupee dividend for ten years remember real value of money has come down.

To year end march 2012, EPS 33c, dividend 25c, pay out of 75%
To year end march 2013, EPS 39c, dividend 25c, pay out of 65%

To date EPS 66c, if we double this 132c, if we go by 65% pay out expected dividend 85c.
