The Colombo bourse closed virtually flat yesterday with the indices marginally pointing in opposite directions – the ASPI up 2.47 points (0.04%) and S&P SL20 down 3.77 points (0.12%) on a turnover of Rs.414.7 million, up from the previous day’s Rs.247.7 million, with 54 losers and 52 gainers almost on even keel while 120 counters closed flat.

"Volumes were slow with bulk of the business coming off crossings in HNB (non-voting) and JKH which contributed over Rs.163 million to the day’s business volumes," a broker said.

A single parcel of 0.7 million HNB (non-voting) was crossed at Rs.116.60 contributing Rs.81.6 million to turnover while a parcel of 4 million JKH crossed at Rs.214.90 contributed Rs.81.6 million, brokers said.

JKH was the most traded stock on the floor closing 10 cents up at Rs.215 on over 0.2 million shares done between Rs.214.10 and Rs.215.50 contributing Rs.45.1 million to turnover.

Distilleries followed closing Rs.4 up at Rs.189 on over 0.1 million shares done between Rs.189 and Rs.190 generating a business volume of Rs.24.8 million with Ceylon Tea Services finishing third on the turnover league closing Rs.10 down at Rs.590 on 28,134 shares contributing Rs.16.6 million to turnover.

"Earlier in the week we saw a parcel of 30,000 CTS done at Rs.590 followed by a single share transacted minutes later at a price of Rs.640 with the counter eventually closing 30 cents down at Rs.640," a broker said.

CTS is a closely-held company with the MJF group being the predominant shareholder.

Non-voting shares of The Finance Company demonstrated volume yesterday closing 80 cents up at Rs.4.40 on 3.5 million shares done between Rs.3.80 and Rs.4.50. Brokers said that many of these shares had been issued to deposit holders against fixed deposits in the troubled finance company.
