Which stock has given the best dividend yield so far in 2013? It's surprisingly not in the regular list.

Yes. It's given a rate similar to a FD and some capital gains also.

I'm believing most Energy & Power sector company will declare good dividend as well as capital gain. (LIOC-Good EPS, Hydro Power-Past & current weather condition).

For good dividend 2013 - TJL,CFVF should be in the list.

Cheers.

FLCH - Reasonable dividend following up a capital gain. may not be exactly in 2014, but all the background setting it for bargain hunting now. Wink

i guess the key is to decide what to consider as the share price during 2013 to determine the best yield as dividends are known but price varies throughout year. not accurate to consider current price but maybe 52 week low ? or jan 2013 prices ?

VPEL gave 0.85 cents dividend and 2013 low is Rs 5.20 so based on that, dividend yield is 16.3 %.

TJL gave a Rs 1.24 dividend and 2013 low is Rs 8.90 so yield is 13.9 %

CFVF gave a Rs 2 dividend and 2013 low is 10.80 so yield is 18.5 %.

ASIY gave a 0.38 cents dividend and a 2013 low price of Rs 2.20 so yield is 17.3 %

ECL gave a 0.85 cents dividend and 2013 low is 3.30 so yield is 25.7 %

for most of the above, the 52 week low and the year 2013 low are same so chances are that these were the share prices in Jan 2013.

so ECL a clear winner ?

The answer depends on few factors

1. Honesty and generosity of management
2. EPS as per already published financial statements

Evaluating the second I believe they may continue a good dividend policy.

Do you know why we all are worried about dividends , its because there were no good capital gains in 2013. But 2014 my expectation is capital gains than dividends.

I think there is a problem with their data gathering program.
My guess is they have mistaken 24 August 2012 and
17 August 2012 announcements as two separate dividends.
Also TTM is wrong.
2012 August announcements should have been ignored at the first place.

i think what has happened is that CTLD has considered the dividends they have declared during FY 2012/2013 as the total dividend irrespective of the FY it was declared for.

for FY 2012/2013
on 24th August 2012 , they declared 0.80 cts.
on 8th Feb 2013, they declared 0.80 cts.
price as at 31st March 2013 was rs 24.10.
therefore, dividend yield is 0.80 + 0.80 divided by 24.10 = 6.63 %

on 4th Sep 2013, they declared Rs 1.20 as a final for 2012/2013 but perhaps incorrectly declared for 2012/2013 (maybe it should be an interim for 2013 / 2014 or maybe not also for tax reasons).
now on 18th Dec 2013, they have declared Rs 1.10 an interim for 2014/2014.

The point of all this is that, if we are going to determine the best dividend yielding stocks for say 2013, firstly we have to decide on whether time period is the calendar year i.e. Jan to Dec 2013 or FY Apr 13 to Mar 14.
then we have to take all dividends declared during that year / period and divide by base price at start of that year / period i.e. Jan 2013 or Apr 2013.

Usually Dividend Yield calculate with current market price.

Agreed. that is the Current Dividend Yield.

however, this thread title is "which stock has given the best dividend yield so far in 2013", technically taking the current price and past dividends during year creates a mismatch in actual yield, due to time, and is not an accurate measure of performance, although it is the accepted format.

i feel that when we are looking back, like now in end 2013 to see what were the best dividend yielding stocks in 2013, we must consider Jan 2013 base price as the denominator in the dividend yield calculation.
the current stock price should reflect forward looking dividends as an yield indicator.

hope this makes sense. just my opinion anyways. no big deal !
