I think govt had to chose Price increase or Milk powder shortage

Price increase may be favorable during the election time than milk powder
shortage

Why can't you stop drinking. I've not taken the bed tea from last 2 years. One glass of water has replaced the need very well.

Govt could've reduced the tax for mil powder by at least 40 rupees and only increase it about 20 rupees.. They chose to hit the common man instead.. Wonders nuh?

Now they could encourage the ppl to drink fresh-milk instead of powdered milk but these actions would increase the fresh-milk price as well. Now we'll have to keep few cows and get the milk on our own..

From these actions I understood the dual face of the Govt. They just talk talk talk high and finally give in  Twisted Evil These road developments would help the ppl when they're utterly in debt and their living expenses are going up day-by-day? Yes developments should continue, in the mean time Govt also need to think of investments to find money to uplift the country status (not the foreign loans) rather than asking ppl pay more and more tax.. This is like multi year right issues for the citizens.. LOL

This is outrageous to increase price by this much.

Think who is really getting affected : Children.

It is okay to increase milk power if there is an alternate option like Fresh Milk.  But how much is Fresh milk.  It is lot more expensive than powered equivalent.

When Govn can spent billions for subsidies for other stuff , do they not see this is a necessity for the average person /children.   Prime responsibility of any Govn  before anything is to keep the population fed and healthy .

Milk though we drink it or not is an essential/ nutrient for the masses.

Check the prices of Milk in India. It is almost 50% less. In Dev countries , ie USA milk is average $3 a Gallon ( cheap on earnings). In Eurpoe though a bit more expensive, it is affordable compared to earningins right ( people in UK/Europe can comment here). In the middle east it is relatively cheap compared to earnings.

One can increase prices for Arnotts  Chocoloate Biscuits,  Champagne, or Caviar,  but it is a so bad  hit the common man in the bread basket.

I hope someone sees sense here.

( ie Does anyone remember what happned when they wanted to  Ban polythene  without an Alternative.  IT caused bigger problems to than before.

In this case , what is the Alternative? This can be a matter of life here.

I do not think it is outrageous.
The latest scientific studies have shown that consumption of dairy products early in life will lead to dialectical conditions in midlife.
Diabetic is on the rise in third world regions and this hike is done with a far " Better intention " in mind.
Protect your flock.  tongue
(Anyway, once the Galle – Matara Highway stretch is opened for pedestrians soon, people will forget those hikes )

Global Whole Milk Powder (WMP) Prices

LAST 12 MONTHS

LAST 5 YEARS

From Feb 2013 to Feb 2014, average world prices have gone up from usd 3500 per mt to current nearly usd 5000 per mt. so current world price is approx usd 5 / kg - fob i.e. Rs 660. add freight, duty, clearing, packaging, distribution, vat, tax etc. now new selling price will be Rs 960.

compare this to when they last increased the price. does anyone know ? (they may have done so earlier for rupee depreciation ).

re Fresh Milk vs Milk Powder - i think equation is approx 1 kg Milk Powder = 6 Litres Fresh Milk.
(from a production & consumption point of view). now prices are also aligning to that.

The point here to asses is , whether Milk is an essential commodity ,  it is a duty of the Govn to protect the common man's  interest ( specially food as it comes before many other things), and is it right to increase by such margins  ( nearly 20%) at one go . ( When we know much bigger subsidies are given at larger scale  and huge amounts are spent for other non essential things).

As much as politics, and protecting company interests against  world prices,  it is a responsibility for Govn protect the common man who votes for them.

For people to vote, they need to be able to get to the Voting booth.

Next slogan :  If  you can't drink Milk,   then  drink  Kola kenda .

Update : Seems it is not an essential.
http://www.sundaytimes.lk/140105/news/no-milk-powder-caa-says-not-considered-essential-78963.html

Maybe the price increase is now only to end the "shortage" in the country.

Those who are politically connected or know the higher ups of this GOVT know they are bunch of uneducated "thugs" who got lucky after winning the war. Talking in filth at meetings is something normal. This period is actually worse than any previous GOVTs. They say inflation is single digit and If you mark down the prices of stuff you buy today and check end of the year you will see that it will be 20 -30%. Problem is the facade we live in will soon end and dont know what kind of crisis the country will end up in year to come. It will be just like the stock market bubble unless there is a change. Chandrika will come as the common candidate from what I hear and visiting temples to do the ground work.

It appears that milk powder price is more sensitive in this forum than than stock market prices

But there will be no big difference in coming election results

Why?

I agree with you fully and I tell you WHY as well; because we are just a bunch of people who are unable to walk our talks.
Squander chances when presented itself.
Then blame foreign entities for our own failings.
That the typical SL way of thinking and doing things.
Take No responsibility but blame others.
Good Luck & Welcome to Sri Lanka.  Very Happy
