It is true that above listed tea companies namely, TPL, MASK, NAMU, BOPL, ELPL and WATA are producing some of the best high quality tea in the world in addition to seasonal tea such UVA tea, Western high grown tea and other high grown tea and some black tea coming from mountains in UVA, Western and NuweraEliya areas. How did you all miss another three major tea related companies such as KVAL, UDPL and BALA? They also produce some of the quality black tea.

I don’t think prices of Kenyan tea will go up sharply in the near future. They could go up during second half of this year. On the other hand tea prices in India will go up. Quality tea will fetch premium prices in the future. High quality tea in China, India and Sri-Lanka could generate premium prices for their high quality tea. Sri-Lanka produces more low grown tea than high grown tea. Time to come there will be short supply in high quality pure high grown tea and mountain tea due to great demand from globally specially from aging population in Japan, North America and Europe. India and China too are going to create more demand for pure tea especially for tea coming from high grown and mountains. In addition global health concern consumers too will create demand for pure high grown and mountain tea.

VP what are the main difference in high grown tea and low grown tea.anvd I know watawala plantation presence in hatton.can u pls enlighten me on other companies whether their presence in high or the low.thanks.

There are three main tea growing regions in Sri Lanka.

Low grown teas which are teas grown on an elevation between sea level to 600m,
Mid Grown teas which are from 600m to 1,200m and
High grown teas which are grown at an elevation above 1,200m

Main high grown tea companies are: TPL, MASK, BOPL,

Other plantations companies such as WATA, HOPL, MAL, MADU, and UDPL also have high grown tea

These high grown tea companies have low grown tea as well.

Area wise some of the best quality tea produce in places like Maskeliya, Nuwera Eliya, UVA, Dimbula and Bogawantalawa. Scottish planters, the first generation planters found that the extremely fertile soil and the high elevation were conducive to the production of very high quality tea in Bogawantalawa areas.

Ceylon Black tea has been the most popular among all teas produced in the world for over a century. High Grown teas are reputed for their aroma, quality and taste. That is why teas from Dimbula, Bogawanatalawa and Nuwara Eliya areas are much sought after by blenders in Tea Importing countries. Uva region produces teas of unique seasonal characters. They are widely used in blends particularly in Germany and Japan. Low Grown teas are popular in West Asia, Middle East and Eastern Europe. There are mountains in UVA and Nuwera Eliya areas.

Mask has high labour costs in my opinion. anyway as a speculative counter can have limited run.

Stocks form their uptrend gradually. For example EXPO was trading around Rs.5 and it is trading around Rs.10. PMB, MBSL and PML all were trading below Rs.12. We are seeing some quality high grown tea from UVA region now. Some of the best high quality high grown tea produce in UVA and Nuwera Eliya areas.

John Keels TEA MARKET REPORT : SALE NO: 31 - 12TH / 13TH AUGUST 2014

Following the large crops in the second quarter of 2014 and the consequent, yet not unusual drop in quality and prices, demand for well-made teas appear to be picking up as auction quantities keep falling. With seasonally brighter teas on offer, particularly from the UVA Region, we expect prices to improve further in the coming sales. Slightly lower crop intakes in most major black tea producing countries and with the impending cooler weather in Russia and Europe, it could prompt a healthier demand in the future sales.

The 1.0 Mkgs of Ex-Estate teas on offer met with fair demand. There was active bidding for better teas on offer. The well twisted brighter BOPs were keenly sought after, whilst the BOPFs too were mostly firm. The below best types however, were easier following less interest from the tea bag sector. Demand for the Nuwara Eliya’s were lower to last following quality. Interest for the Uva seasonal teas advanced further this week with the improvement of quality and flavour. The first Rs.1000/- invoice for this season was recorded by a Pekoe invoice from Uva Highlands Estate.

The Low grown CTCs sold well. The clean leaf High & Medium PF1s were firm, others continued to attract less demand on account of poor quality.

The 3.7 Mkgs of Low Growns that were on offer this week, met with good demand. In the Leafy Category, BOP1 grade once again met with less inquiry, however Pekoe varieties maintained a firm market. Well made OP/OPAs were barely steady, but the others met with less inquiry. The tone for the Small Leaf varieties were somewhat different this week, with prices gaining for most grades, particularly towards the latter part of the sale.

Considering that some of the main markets for Ceylon Orthodox teas are undergoing turbulent times, prices still could be quoted as “quite satisfactory”.

Iran was quite active, however the main Russian buyers were somewhat subdued, there was useful demand from Syria, Turkey, whilst Saudi Arabia , Iraq and Libya were rather quiet.
