A little known fact about Isaac Newton is that he lost $2.72 million USD in today's money due to speculation in The South Sea Company stock in the 1720s. As a result of this crisis, he stated "I can calculate the motions of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people." Thus, Isaac Newton was not a good investor, and Warren Buffett is not a well known scientist.

I am happy that I have one thing common with Newton lost some money in stock market :lol!: :lol!:

I guess lot of guys out there with losses right now... This might be some condolence... :flower: :flower:

I think, unfortunately, Newton did not have a broker firm. He could have made lot of profits if he thought about that at that time.

Great idea... How much do we need to start a broker firm in Sri Lanka...

Hey guys draw all your money back from stock market and lets put the money to start a broker firm..
I guess there are about 2000 people here ....
I am sure we can raise one billion...
No worries about price going up or down we will make money..... :lol!: :lol!: :king: :king:

That is what you call an Acid Test. I have also heard that his IQ score was poor.

I neither a scientist like Isaac Newton nor an investor like Warren Buffett. I do respect my limited money more than both of those.

Looking forward to see a market without this idiotic credit facility & hope that UN saga will be over soon.
Overall this market badly needed some rest after two years long bull run.

South Sea Bubble

Flashback to the early 1700s. England was in a spot of bother having sent itself broke fighting a war involving the French, Spanish and money. The government approached the South Sea Company to help them out, and put conditions in place to attract investors. People always want to make a quick buck, and the investors enthusiastically invested – in droves.

Speculation became rampant as the share price kept skyrocketing. It was thought that this company “could never fail”.

One of the main money-making ventures of the South Sea Company was trading African slaves for the Americans.

Isaac Newton

Even Isaac Newton got caught up in the South Sea mania and invested a big chunk of his fortune. Interestingly, he pulled out early (after making a respectable 7000 pounds) then went back in after the bubble continued to inflate. The inevitable bust happened and he lost 20,000 pounds – a considerable sum at the time.

As a result of this crisis, he stated “I can calculate the motions of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people”.

How the wheels have turned. Now wall street is full of physicists and mathematicians. In fact some people say the global financial crisis was caused by physicists!!!!
(here is one writer from that point of view : http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/10/science/10quant.html )

So I guess the wheel has turned a full circle and Newton got is revenge from beyond the grave.

In another thread, someone claimed he was from a physics background and asked what he should learn, and I said 'stick with what you know' (more or less) and everyone thought I was being insulting!!
