Cant predict the life brother it could be today that we die. So better to be a trader for me. One of my friends fathers still holds 1000 nest shares he bought at 10 in 1970.guess the dividend yield he earnd. Who bought shars before end of the war are the winners. Vone.shl.could be 2 long terms.

Dear Mahawatta

Your question is a very valid one. If some one can find good shares and keep them for life long they are the real winners who can sleep well. Warren Buffet pick such shares and he says when you pick shares you must be able to keep them if stock market close from tomorrow onwards.

How do you pick such shares?

Please read Ben Grahams book Intelligent Investor. That writer is the Guru of Warren Buffet.

To simplify the Buffets Formulas.. Buy shares where price to book value is below 1.5, High EPS and low PE ratio..ideally below 10..

In my case I consider dividend yield and ability to pay that dividend for a long time..

I know one thing.. You dont like my answer.. Instead you like me to name such shares...

Ok , I keep Seylan Bank, Sampath, PLC.N, which I purchased well below current market price and has no intention to sell unless of a fundamental reason .. Are these shares still qualify few of above parameters at current prices... check it yourself

Will people drink Ceylon Tea in next 50/60 years.. My argument is Yes. People will select many natural products and avoid Coke and others thanx to Social media which is not based on paid advertisements, believing so I will recommend ASIY, TPL as they still fulfill above criteria..

Will people construct Houses within our life time... Thinking so I purchased CIND,LWL.ACL etc.. Are still these shares qualify for above category.. Check it yourself.. and also consider forward Earnings as well..

I believe many Chinses will get attracted to Sri Lankan Hotels as Europeans find SL as an expensive destination.. If so buy shares of hotels which are undervalued at the moment but with less dividend yields...

I have given you the answer as a government teacher who will not give you tute with sugar coated file cover... Sorry for that mate.. But if you will learn yourself you will enjoy your life...

Share market is a Trading Place. Not a investing Place. Specially in Sri lanka do not go for long time plan. Always keep touch with Information, Speculation and Manipulations. Sell any type of shares when you get 20% profit from your invested money.

We all know how people give MANAPA vote to candidate of govt and opposition

Good example is how people gave m MANAPA in last general election

in GAMPAHA district which one of is most educated electorate in the country

Stock traders also represent that mentality

You can't expect rational behavior

With due respect to DG.D let me tell this story as well

Once I was evaluating Pelwatta Sugar. I had just played EAST WEST and waiting to play another right issue.. Pelwatta has claimed about issuing rights and I was happy to contribute to that rights and just bought 1000 shares of Pelwatta to get with good price

By that time I was reading ESE WEENAM MINISUNE ASAW... a novel by Sugathapala de silva.. His story just hinted the love of SLFP governments to acquire others land.. I was very cautious about Palwatta..., which other wise I should have made it 50% of my portfolio.. Now you all know what happened to Palwatta investors...

So read and understand sri lankan pulse as well...This is a different game

@ Mahawatte; I don't believe there's something called lifetime investment in financial market. Market doesn't go in straight line, it moves in zigzag, perhaps like a roller coaster. So, unless you sell you cannot be successful. And there's also a nice quote that "don't fell in love with stocks."
However, you can invest in short, mid or long term. But, its a different story.So, you've to trade not according to our lifetime, but according to the lifespan of stocks;
1. Accumulation.
2. Expansion.
3. Distribution.
4. Contraction.
So, you've buy at right time and sell at right time. Unless, you sell at right time you loose what you earned. (means money and opportunities)
So, I think if you're hoping to do a lifetime investment, its better to buy a land/house or start your own business, I'm not joking bro.., seriously..

But the best place to do that would be at a casino, given the unreliable nature of CSE, it would be always safe to go for long term stocks. That is my opinion.

What is point of buying shares for a life time ?
when are you going to benefit your investment ?
If you are planning to make a income for the children thats fine.

I would rather say extended longterm investment.(20+ years)
Strong factor to think of is divident yield.
best thing is to go for blue chips and companies which have potential of growth.
I would invest in Banks , diversified Holdings and Hotels.
few eg -
SAMP , COMB , HNB , PLC
JKH , SPEN , HHL , SHL
AHUN , CONN
GUAR , Etc.....
