Dec 09, Colombo: Following the announcement by the Sri Lanka's opposition candidate that a fund has been set up for kidney patients, the government has announced its own measure to provide an allowance to kidney patients.

The government has announced that it has made arrangements to pay an allowance of up to Rs. 3,000 for each kidney patient with effect from January 2015.

After handing over nominations for presidential election Monday, the common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena Monday announced that he has initiated and activated a special fund "Maithripala Sirisena - Kidney Patient Medical Relief Fund" to provide relief to the kidney patients in the country.

Sirisena said he will use the money he has received for poster campaigns and cutouts for the fund to assist the kidney patients and their family members in fulfilling their financial needs pertaining to surgeries and treatments.

Under the government's plan two types of kidney patients will be identified and accordingly, a persons who had been diagnosed with preliminary stage of the disease would be paid Rs. 1,500 per month and the persons with severe stage of the Chronic Kidney Disease would be paid Rs. 3,000 per month.

It has been estimated that around 50 million rupees per month will be required to pay the allowance to kidney patients.
