Dec 11, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today sentenced a Provincial Councilor of main opposition United National Party (UNP) to death for the killing of two pedestrians.
Ratnapura High Court judge Achala Singappuli sentenced the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council member Hasitha Muhandiram a.k.a. Sarpaya (Serpent) to death for vehicular homicide of two people in Kalawana.
Muhandiram, was accused of killing two people in Kalawana by running a vehicle over them on December 31, 2002. At the time of the crime he was a member of the opposition in the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council and was the chief UNP organizer for Kalawana.
Muhandiram was elected to the Sabaragamu Provincial Council with highest preferential votes from the Ratnapura District under UNP ticket at the 2012 PC election.
