(Lanka-e-News- 22.Dec.2014, 11.30PM) Kumar Sangakkara ,a cricketer of the rare breed of heroes and a gentleman to the finger tips proved what he is worth when he forthrightly and to the face of the Presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse said , he cannot support latter’s election campaign .What is most striking and significant to note is, Sangakkara had boldly and openly told this without any hesitation to Mahinda Rajapakse at Temple Trees , and had been able to walk out unharmed.
Sangakkara prior to his tour overseas was invited by Mahinda to Temple Trees who requested Sangakkara to extend his support to him at the upcoming elections . Sangakkara had however politely rejected the request . Mahinda had then requested Sangakkara to appear at least for an advertisement for him , which too he had declined . Mahinda had thereafter told him , as much as Rs. 2 to 3 billion! or any amount demanded can be paid to him in that regard, when Sangakkara had made it abundantly clear in no uncertain terms to Mahinda , he is playing cricket for the sake of the country , and not for political or monetary gains . So saying he has walked out of Temple Trees.
The people must consider themselves fortunate that there are still gentlemen cricketers par excellence like Sangakkara who are honorable sons of the Sri Lankan soil sincerely concerned about the country , as well as politicians like Maithripala who dared to lead a campaign after coming out from the Rajapakse camp against the ethanol dealers after making supreme self sacrifices in order to defeat the Rajapakse family

Going after popular cricketers shows the bankruptcy of the politicians. Most of our cricketers have earned their money through hard work and talent and would not like to compromise their ideologies for black money like the selfish and opportunistic dirty politicians. Whatever the party that call upon these people to wash the dirty linen for a pot of gold the honest and genuine people should learn to keep off. They will die with a clear conscience.

Now Dilshan is appearing in MR support campaign. Don't know how many billions he got from MR for this. I know MR is trying to get some opposition MPs for Rs. 500 million (less popular MPs). Anyway, Dilshan is a money greedy man and would do anything for money.

Hats off to Sanga for his guts. We need honest politicians like Sanga to take the country to next level.

Just think where this money coming from? It's the tax money we paid for our milk powder, rice, dhal and everything. Soon after the election if MR wins people will really feel it. The prices will increase like nothing to recover all the money spent on election.

Disgusting garbage in politics should be brushed out from every nook & corner. I wish that Sanga would maintain his status not mingling with stinky politics. My cricket idol Sana already lost his reputation & love from spectators stepping to this filthy field. We all wish that sports to be freed from unwanted hands in the year 2015.

Well said friends.

However in this godforsaken country what is free of politicks. These goons have become legislators with the vote of the illiterate citizens and then become administrators of all activities under the sun. There was a time when honest and educated politicians were only involved in passing legislatures and were called hon member because they were doing a honorary job. Today they are uneducated, corrupt and paid goons calling themselves honourable. Can this be changed by somebody.

I was very surprised and disappointed to hear of a story being circulated regarding His Excellency the President offering me money to support his election campaign. I would like to categorically confirm that at no time whatsoever have I been asked by the President in any manner to be a part of his political campaign. The allegation being circulated on social media claiming that I have been offered a financial incentive to support his election campaign is also completely untrue. These are just false stories concocted with malicious intent that are trying to use and abuse my name and I would like to request everyone to ignore them. Thanks, Sanga.

Sanga disappointed over rumours

Kumar Sangakkara via a status update on his official Facebook fan page today denied rumors of President Mahinda Rajapaksa offering him money to support the Presidential election campaign.

The allegation was leveled through some Facebook fan pages on this regard for past few days.

“I was very surprised and disappointed to hear of a story being circulated regarding His Excellency the President offering me money to support his election campaign. Thanks, Sanga.,” Sangakkara said in his status update.

However, former Sri Lankan skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan has opted to support Mahinda Rajapaksa in the January 8 presidential election. Dilshan met the President yesterday (25) with a group of youth to extend support to him.
