Though Colombo Stock Exchange had been a top performer during 2009 and 2010, it has failed to maintain its momentum mainly due to the regulator’s interventions, analysts said.

Analysts also opine that funds available to invest in the local capital market have been diverted to numerous other investment categories.

Speaking on market movements and investor sentiments, Head of Frontier Capital Partners Nishan Sumanadeera said, Colombo stock market investors are now looking at alternative asset classes to invest and diversify the capital gains they made from the CSE, as there are investment opportunities due to the booming economy.

“Frequent regulatory changes had also made investors move away from the market and recent IPO’s had taken away large chunks of funds from the market” he pointed out, adding that people are in the lookout for more investment opportunities such as green field projects and direct venture capital investments.

I cannot fully agree with the above post, because the stock exchange is still the only game in town....though investors would love to have other options there aren't any feasible , lucrative options at the moment. The commodity exchange is yet to materialize.

Besides, the CSE is going through a consolidation phase, hence cannot expect dramatic returns like in previous years.

Though the SEC has been inconsistent as regards credit deadlines lets not forget that they averted the impending bubble...even the devil has to be given its due.

When you have to sneeze, sneeze and get rid of the what is bad.
Even forests have a cleanser called bush fires to clean the waste and start again.
May be SEC should have let it go down naturally 10% or so and let it heal by itself.

"Although regulator has extended clearing off broker provided credit till end of this year, market is unable to move forward, as small time investors have now become poor after a thrashing by regulator rules since last October, an analyst said."

Anyway Daily Mirror and Sunday Times are the only newspapers I know who have talked about the plight of the small investors from the rule fixing. Other independent journalists have company press releases in their mouths.

Its no secret that most investors have been looking out for alternative investments opportunities, coz Sri Lankan Stock Market has not given sufficient return during this year. Land is appreciating too fast, Direct investments, Startups, precious metals are flying... this has been the newest name of the game. This will always happen in a maturing market. Sri Lankan Market is beginning to mature..... Stock Market Investors, Please Watch Out!!!!

Good article. another perspective to monotonous thinkers...

I already taken about 10% out from CSE and invest in a land. It may not give initial return but I think it is the time to invest in properties in selected areas.

There was a very good thread about these out of box investments couple of weeks ago & it gives someone much needed info.
