Thilak Karunaratne will be re-appointed as Chairman of the Securities and Exchanges Commission of Sri Lanka, Minister Rajitha Senaratne told Ada Derana.

Tilak Karunaratne is a former Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) member who joined the United National Party (UNP) before joining the Sihala Urumaya. He is also a Chartered Chemist and was the Managing Director of Multiform Chemicals (Pvt) Ltd.

Earlier, Karunaratne submitted his resignation, on 17 August 2012, saying he had come under pressure from stock market players under investigation for stock manipulation.

I think we might see a good movement in market as well as a good regulator soon if Thilak Karunaratne comes back to SEC.

Thilak Karunaratne was working hard to appoint a well qualified Director General to Securities and Exchange Commission those days with a pool that included a set of well qualified market oriented individuals including former Acting Director General Dr. Harendra Dissa Bandara, Harsha Fernando and Nishan Sumanadeera who were vying for the top post.

According to reports Attorney-at-law Harsha Fernando, is an Advisor at the Asian Development Bank and was formerly attached to the Attorney General’s Department. Dr. Harendra Dissa Bandara is the incumbent Director of the Financial Services Academy (FSA) under the purview of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Sri Lanka and was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura (USJ) from 1990 to 2010. Both Dr. Bandara and Fernando are old boys of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia.

Those days reports also said that the top Investment Banker, Nishan Sumanadeera had facilitated some of the top investment ventures and transactions, and has mulled some of the biggest investments made by listed companies during the last three years.

Sumanadeera had been instrumental in making three post-war emerging ‘Conglomerates’ such as C.W. Mackie PLC; Lanka Orix Leasing (LOLC) PLC and Softlogic Holdings PLC diversify through their merger and acquisition strategies to reposition themselves for Sri Lanka’s next growth phase.

In 2009, Sumanadeera facilitated the sale of C.W. Mackie to Lankem Group worth over Rs1.4 billion, and also the 2010 Confifi Hotel Group sale to consortium made up of LOLC and Browns group in a deal worth over Rs 2.5 billion. Again Sumanadeera turned a page in the history of investment banking in Sri Lanka, with the facilitation of Softlogic Holdings’ acquisition of Asian Alliance Insurance in a Rs.3.3 billion deal, surpassing the large number of major acquisitions that took place in 2011.

It will be good if Harsha Fernando or Nishan Sumanadeera is being selected for SEC Director General post.

Those days Thilak said to be under political pressure to appoint Dr.Nalaka for the seat amidst Advertiser turned Investor who manipulated the market was putting pressure for Thilak to quit SEC when Thilak send a letter to investigate advertiser turned investor for manipulating PAP shares.

What i told my friend was he's good for a principals rule.forget manipulation.he didnt do anythng good and the disicions taken was aufull.thilak and jkh combination pushed market to 4700.now jkh same story and if thilak is back??

This forum administration had done the same thing in 2012 August. After so many agitation by then senior members, Co-Admin Dinusl was made as a scapegoat. I can recollect so many new accounts were originated in WTC area and used to mudsling Tilak, Indrani and KCV.

Agree,

Admins should not be baby sitters, and should be unbiased, not taking things personal, honest, integrity, due care and more importantly professional. Therefore when appointing ADMINS, who appoints them have the Greatest responsibility similar to the president of a country.

That is why I have given up my admin post in 1 day after one day of appointment because I felt that I dont have time to do a good contribution. I could easily hold it without a good contribution for reputation but that is not the expectation of the members of this forum.

But I still humbly thank who appointed me recognizing my skills and ability to to handle it.

Admins, this is a new era, lets manage this forum with almost professionalism coz we are professionals
