The Minister made this comment in response of a question raised by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Minister has said that although the entire income of the government in 2011 was Rs. 974 billion, over Rs. 895 billion had been spent on paying debt installments and interests. He said that in 2012 92.5% of the Rs. 1.094 trillion state income had been spent on paying up debt.
Pointing out that Rs. 1.480 trillion out of the Rs. 1.498 trillion estimated income of the new government's 2015 interim budget have been allocated for repaying debt, Karunanayake said it is a serious problem for the country's economy.local media
