Hi everyone,

Great to see an active SL community focusing on stock trading online.

I am new to the market and would like some advice and tips to get ahead in the game.

How well is the SL market is general? What kind of annual returns do smart investors make in SL?

Also, what kind of stocks (industry or specific names) are recommended to invest in?

Would also appreciate tips on how to analyze stocks and make good choices.

What is expected to happen to the stock market over the next few weeks now that the parliament is dissolved?

Looking forward to hear from everyone in the forum.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
L

This is one of the best times to find winners in the market as market is very attractive on valuation. There was an uncertainty of proroguing parliament. Now it is not there. Market should react very positively. Prominent business leaders wanted to have early general election or national government.

Try to follow few sectors or groups so that you can get some ideas and accordingly you can do some home work and then you should be able to pick some winners in the market.

Groups to watch

Banking and Finance
Poultry (There are three listed poultry related stocks in the market namely BFL, GRAN and TAFL. This group has very strong outlook)
Diversify
Manufacturing
Travel and tourism

Plantations especially tea stocks (this one of the out of favour groups in the market due to short term issues. Tea prices cannot stay below the cost of production for a long period. If you can study global tea trend and if you can find out hitting tea prices above the cost of production then there can be some more than five baggers in this group. Finally Kenya is having attractive tea prices. It should follow in the Colombo tea auction as well. Otherwise tea producers will think about diversifying their businesses for their survival. Tea stocks to watch: TPL and MPRH (Managing Company of Bagawanatalawa plantations. They are producing some of the best high quality tea in the world.)

Stocks such as SHL, AEL, PMB, MPRH and MBSL can have strong momentum rally. For anything we should do some home work. Please buy stocks after doing some home work. Market leaders such as HAYL, COMB, HNB, SAMP and JKH also should have rally in the remaining stages of current bull market.

Good luck!

Thanks for taking the time to reply with some helpful advice, will certainly consider your points. What is the usual reaction of the market right after an event like the dissolving of parliament? Is it advisable to wait and watch how it goes or buy? I made a bid to buy this evening and a bit concerned if I should have waited since they announced dissolving of parliament.

Thanks.

If you analyse market even there were great winners in the market during period of market pause and short term uncertainty. It created opportunities for value investors. If you look some stocks we see hardly any large quantity of stocks at lower levels.  There will be winners in the market in the coming weeks. We have to analyse some situation differently at different times. I think market should react very positively in the coming week. Business community wanted early election or national government. Now they got it. Sometimes we can see breakout in the market.

How many concerns were there in the market during last five years locally as well as internationally? Did stock markets die? Normally average investors concern about inflation, interest rate, foreign selling and buying and short term issues such as political events etc. They don’t spend time to identify winners in the market in every situation.  As long as bull market is intact we should become very bullish. Short term issues create great opportunity in bull market.

Good luck!

I normally don’t target short term prices. After splits I will first study their base. Some like to buy stocks before splits. Mainly I rely on fundamentals and future earnings. My study is based on future earnings and new developments in the industry etc. Short term share prices are not that important for me. Today’s loss making companies will become tomorrow’s profit making companies.

It is time to identify fast growers, breakout stocks and loss making companies which can make profits in the future. This bull market has more legs. On valuation this market is very attractive. It has become number one attractive frontier market in Asia now. It is also time to identify coming market breakout. After that we should see continuation of remaining stages of current bull market.
