Sri Lanka’s exports were up to 1.011 million dollars, a rise of 12.9 percent with growth in the textile and apparel sectors, new data shows.
“The USA, UK, India, Italy and Germany were the leading markets for merchandise exports of Sri Lanka in September 2017, ” the central bank said.
Industrial exports were up 11.1 percent to 744.5 million dollars in September, with apparel up 12.9 percent to 431.5 million US dollars.
Agricultural exports were up 17.3 percent to 262.7 million dollars.
“This was due to the improved performance in tea, owing to higher prices in the international market and growth in export volumes,” the bank said.
“Earnings from spices also increased considerably due to higher export volumes of pepper, cloves and cinnamon.”
Rubber products grew 13.3 percent to 76.5 million US dollars.
The trade gap up to September expanded 8.2 percent to 6.84 billion dollars.

You post a Single negative News there are many people jump in to start criticizing the government and predicts a great stock market collapse...  You post a positive news no one want to talk and discuss positive outcome of it.. I wonder How we may move into the status of developed nation with this kind of shit holes living in this country...
Pathetic everyone talks discuss everything in political bias and no one has the strength the discuss things in lieu of political bias.

Sri Lanka to open US$3.5mn spice testing lab for exports

Spices were Sri Lanka’s seventh largest export in 2019. Department of Agriculture Photo.
ECONOMYNEXT- Sri Lanka’s Industrial Development Board (IDB), in partnership with multilateral agencies is in the process of installing a 3.5 million US dollar laboratory which will reduce export costs of spices, a United Nations Industrial Development Organization official said.

“Some of the equipment for the food testing lab have already arrived at the IDB, and some training has been provided, but its not yet fully operational,” UNIDO India Field Office Representative Rene van Berkel told EconomyNext in January.

He said the European Union is funding the project.

Once the laboratory is set up, it will reduce shipment rejections for spice exporters, and reduce costs of testing consignments for food safety.

Spices were Sri Lanka’s seventh largest export, with 312.5 million US dollars in revenue for 2019, down 13.2 percent from a year earlier.

A detail assessment was conducted to ascertain the testing capabilities and requirements in Sri Lanka, van Berkel said.

“Previously, exporters had to send samples to Europe or to India for testing.”

IDB had some capacity to test samples, but the most common internationally recognized tests were not available, he said.

“So, we are trying to ensure that the most common tests are possible in Sri Lanka. Some of the very advanced tests would still have to be done elsewhere.”

“But many of the tests are for example, checking on the absence of certain chemicals or bugs.”

He said previously, exporters who did not conduct the proper tests faced shipment rejections in many markets, like Europe.

“So the two alternatives were to spend time sending a sample to test and get its results, or to ship the container and face the possibility of getting rejected.”

“And if the container is rejected, it cannot be imported back, so it becomes waste,” van Berkel said.

The food testing will be available for spices, with a specific focus on cinnamon. Spices in powder or paste form will also be tested. (Colombo/Jan28/2020)

Sri Lanka rubber industry calls for state support

Sri Lanka Exports Rubber-plantations-lg-700x394

ECONOMYNEXT- Sri Lanka’s rubber producers, who export nearly 1 billion US dollars annually, is calling for state support during the coronavirus pandemic, reminding that the industry is making essential gloves for healthcare practitioners combating the crisis.
Sri Lanka’s government had extended moratoriums for working capital debt, and directed such operational loans to be provided at cheap rates.

However, tourism and apparel sectors, which bring in 4-5 billion US dollars in foreign exchange were given special moratoriusm.
Sri Lanka Association of Manufacturers and Exporters of Rubber Products Director General Rohan Masakorala said the rubber industry has not yet been consulted on the impact of coronavirus.
“Our members have expressed disappointment as the government has failed to look at the traditional export sector.”

“We have written to the Minister of Plantations and Industries to get their attention to these vital sectors of the economy just as the other export industries.”
The rubber industry is supporting the government by supplying medical gloves to the Health Ministry, he said.
Sri Lanka’s rubber industry is also a large exporter of rubber gloves. According to International Trade Centre statistics, of the 979.4 million US dollars in raw and processed rubber exports, 197.3 million US dollars are rubber glove sales, with the US and Germany being key clients.

“We need the government to facilitate the production of the rubber industry, as our members provide medical gloves that has a local as well as international demand as hospitals need the products,” Masakorala said.
“We expect a downturn of about 40 percent of rubber exports this year and a large number of SMEs are going to get affected through the supply chain.”
“If our exporters are not given the proposed moratorium of six months repayment of loans and working capital loans at 4 percent, the impact could be even worse.”
He said support should be extended to rubber farmers as well, since there are already reports of rubber tapping slowing down, affecting thousands of households.
“Things are not easy for the rubber industry and we expect government to treat all exporters (direct & indirect) in a fair and an equitable manner, through a sustainable policy on export sector,” Masakorala said. (Colombo/Mar24/2020)
